Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure provide combined multi-coupler assembly for quickly connecting a top drive to a tool. The combined multi-coupler assembly includes a drive stem and a tool dock that may be coupled to each other. When the drive stem and the tool dock are connected, axial loads, torsional loads, and hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, optical, or other types of communications may be transferred between the drive stem and the tool dock.

Claims (39)

1. A combined multi-coupler for connecting to a top drive, comprising:

a stem for connecting to the top drive;

a first coupling plate fixedly attached to the stem, wherein the first coupling plate has one or more notches formed therethrough;

a securing plate movable relative to the first coupling plate, wherein the securing plate has one or more securing keys aligned with the one or more notches in the first coupling plate, and each securing key is movable between a locked position in the corresponding notch and an unlocked position out of the corresponding notch; and

a second coupling plate adapted to connect to a tool, wherein the second coupling plate has one or more interlock keys, and each interlock key is alignable with a corresponding notch in the first coupling plate.

2. The combined multi-coupler of claim 1 , further comprising a biasing element coupled to the securing plate to bias the securing plate to push the securing keys into the notches.

3. The combined multi-coupler of claim 2 , further comprising one or more actuators coupled to the securing plate to move the securing keys out of the notches.

4. The combined multi-coupler of claim 1 , further comprising one or more couplers disposed in the securing plate.

5. The combined multi-coupler of claim 1 , wherein each interlock key comprises a neck portion and a head portion, and a width of the head portion corresponds to a width of the corresponding notch.

6. The combined multi-coupler of claim 1 , wherein:

the securing plate includes a first coupler;

the second coupling plate includes at least one second coupler corresponding to the first coupler.

7. The combined multi-coupler of claim 6 , wherein the first coupler is at least one of a hydraulic, a pneumatic, an electrical, or an optical coupler.

8. The combined multi-coupler of claim 6 , wherein the second coupler is connectable with the first coupler disposed in one of the securing keys.

9. The combined multi-coupler of claim 1 , wherein each interlock key has an “L” shape.

10. The combined multi-coupler of claim 1 , wherein the securing plate includes one or more recesses configured to receive a corresponding interlock key.

11. The combined multi-coupler of claim 1 , wherein one or more actuators are disposed between the first coupling plate and the securing plate, wherein the one or more actuators are configured to move the securing plate relative to the first coupling plate.

12. The combined multi-coupler of claim 11 , wherein the one or more actuators are a hydraulic cylinder.

13. The combined multi-coupler of claim 1 , wherein each interlock key has a shoulder configured to abut a surface of the first coupling plate when the interlock key is inserted into the corresponding notch, wherein the interlock key is in contact with a corresponding securing key of the one or more securing keys when the corresponding securing key is in the locked position.

14. The combined multi-coupler of claim 1 , wherein the stem includes a central bore.

15. A method of operating a top drive coupler, comprising:

aligning an interlock key of a first coupling plate with a notch of a second coupling plate, wherein a securing key of a securing plate is disposed in the notch;

placing the interlock key in the notch, wherein placing the interlock key in the notch displaces the securing key from the notch and moves the securing plate relative to the second coupling plate;

interlocking the interlock key with the second coupling plate by either rotating the first coupling plate relative to the second coupling plate or rotating the second coupling plate relative to the first coupling plate;

inserting the securing key into the notch to lock the interlock key in the notch.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

moving the securing plate relative to the second coupling plate to remove the securing key from the notch;

disengaging the interlock key from the second coupling plate; and

withdrawing the interlock key from the notch.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein inserting the securing key into the notch connects a first coupler of the securing key with a second coupler of the first coupling plate.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first and second couplers are at least one of a hydraulic, a pneumatic, an electrical, or an optical coupler.

19. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

inserting the securing key into a recess in the securing plate.

20. A combined multi-coupler for connecting to a top drive, comprising:

a stem for connecting to the top drive;

a first coupling plate fixedly attached to the stem, wherein the first coupling plate has one or more notches formed therethrough;

a securing plate movable relative to the first coupling plate, wherein the securing plate has one or more securing keys aligned with the one or more notches in the first coupling plate, and each securing key is movable between a locked position in the corresponding notch and an unlocked position out of the corresponding notch;

a biasing element coupled to the securing plate to bias the securing plate to push the securing keys into the notches; and

one or more actuators coupled to the securing plate to move the securing keys out of the notches.
