Abstract

A portable light fastening assembly for use with the human interface of an electronic device includes a lamp housing and an adjustable attachment device extending from the lamp housing. An ultra-violet (UV) light source is at least partially enclosed in the lamp housing such that the adjustable attachment device includes an engagement member and a receptacle housing such that the engagement member can be removably fastened within the receptacle housing for holding the lamp housing in a fixed position.

2. The germicidal system of claim 1 wherein said germicidal system tracks and records metric data in memory on use and performance of said germicidal system.

3. The germicidal system of claim 2 wherein said metric data includes at least one of total time in use, total bulb-on time, total completed disinfection cycles, and total partially completed cycles.

4. The germicidal system of claim 1 wherein said processor is configured to activate the UV light source for a first time period that is a function of an intensity of said illumination pattern, such that said illumination pattern projected by said UV light source at least partially sterilizes the touch surface of the human interface device to no greater than below a surgical grade sterilization.

5. The germicidal system of claim 1 wherein said processor is configured to activate said UV light source when said sensor has not detected motion within a first time period and said processor has not received communication associated with activation of the human interface device within said first time period.

6. The germicidal system of claim 5 wherein said processor is configured to deactivate the UV light source when a second time period has expired, such that said illumination pattern projected by said UV light source at least partially sterilizes the touch surface of the human interface device to no greater than below a surgical grade sterilization.

7. The germicidal system of claim 1 , wherein a DC power source is in electrical communication with said UV light source utilizing a universal serial bus (USB) connection, and wherein said USB connection provides communication associated with activation of the human interface device.

8. The germicidal system of claim 1 , wherein said housing is a housing of the human-interface device and said UV light source is configured to project said UV illumination pattern through said housing from an internal side of the human interface device to an external side of the human interface device.

9. The germicidal system of claim 1 , wherein the germicidal system is disposed external to the human interface device.

10. The germicidal system of claim 9 wherein said control system is configured to turn on said UV light source for a first time period that is a function of an intensity of said illumination pattern, such that said illumination pattern projected by said UV light source at least partially sterilizes a touch surface of the human interface device to no greater than below a surgical grade sterilization.

11. The germicidal system of claim 9 wherein said processor is configured to turn on said UV light source when said control system has not detected motion within a first time period and said control system has not received communication associated with activation of the human interface device within said first time period.

12. The germicidal system of claim 11 wherein said control system is configured to turn off the UV light source when a second time period has expired, such that said illumination pattern projected by said UV light source at least partially sterilizes the touch surface of the human interface device to no greater than below a surgical grade sterilization.

13. The germicidal system of claim 9 , wherein a DC power source is in electrical communication with said UV light source utilizing a universal serial bus (USB) connection, and wherein said USB connection provides communication associated with activation of the human interface device.

14. The germicidal system of claim 9 , wherein said housing is a housing of the human-interface device and said UV light source is configured to project said UV illumination pattern through said housing from an internal side of the human interface device to an external side of the human interface device.

15. The germicidal system of claim 9 , wherein the germicidal system is disposed external to the human interface device.

16. The germicidal system of claim 1 wherein the human interface device and touch surface are external to said germicidal system, wherein said germicidal system further comprises a wired or wireless communication connection and wherein said processor is configured to receive said communication associated with activation of the external human interface device.

17. A germicidal system or use in at least partially sterilizing a human interface device comprising:

a housing;

an ultra-violet (UV) light source at least partially enclosed in said housing and configured to project a UV illumination pattern;

a control system including a sensor and a processor, wherein the processor is configured to activate the UV light source to initiate a disinfection cycle of the touch surface between human uses of the human interface device, wherein the processor is configured to activate the UV light source to initiate a periodic disinfection cycle of the touch surface, said control system coupled to said housing;

wherein said control system is configured to detect motion in a monitored area and to turn the UV light source from on to off when motion is detected, and

wherein said control system is configured to receive communication associated with activation of the human interface device and in response turn the UV light source from on to off.

18. The germicidal system of claim 17 wherein the human interface device and the touch surface are external to said germicidal system, wherein said germicidal system further comprises a wired or wireless communication connection and wherein said processor is configured to receive said communication associated with activation of the external human interface device and in response turn the UV light source from on to off.

19. A method of operating a germicidal device to at least partially sterilize a human interface device including a touch surface, said method comprising the steps of:
