wherein the first forming cup is configured to direct a first staple leg end away from the longitudinal axis in a first transverse direction,

wherein the second forming cup is configured to direct a second staple leg end away from the longitudinal axis in a second transverse direction opposite the first transverse direction.

2. The anvil of claim 1 , wherein the first inner end of the first forming cup extends longitudinally beyond the second inner end of the second forming cup in a direction toward the second pocket end.

3. The anvil of claim 1 , wherein the first inner end of the first forming cup is located on a first lateral side of the longitudinal axis, wherein the second inner end of the second forming cup is located on an opposed second lateral side of the longitudinal axis.

4. The anvil of claim 3 , wherein the first outer end is positioned at least partially on both the first lateral side and the second lateral side of the longitudinal axis, wherein the second outer end is positioned at least partially on both the first lateral side and the second lateral side of the longitudinal axis.

5. The anvil of claim 1 , wherein the first forming cup further includes a first interior sidewall extending between the first outer end and the first inner end, wherein the first interior sidewall is configured to direct the first staple leg end away from the longitudinal axis in the first transverse direction,

wherein the second forming cup further includes a second interior sidewall extending between the second outer end and the second inner end, wherein the second interior sidewall is configured to direct the second staple leg end away from the longitudinal axis in the second transverse direction.

6. The anvil of claim 5 , wherein each of the first interior sidewall and the second interior sidewall extends angularly relative to the longitudinal axis.

7. The anvil of claim 5 , wherein each of the first interior sidewall and the second interior sidewall extends across the longitudinal axis.

8. The anvil of claim 5 , wherein first interior sidewall and the second interior sidewall extend parallel to one another.

9. The anvil of claim 1 , wherein the first forming cup further includes a first base surface extending between the first outer end and the first inner end, wherein the first base surface is configured to direct the first staple leg end from the first outer end toward the first inner end, and

wherein the second forming cup further includes a second base surface extending between the second outer end and the second inner end, wherein the second base surface is configured to direct a second staple leg end from the second outer end toward the second inner end.

10. The anvil of claim 9 , wherein each of the first base surface and the second base surface is angled laterally relative to the tissue contacting surface.

11. The anvil of claim 9 , wherein each of the first base surface and the second base surface is concave and includes an inflexion point, wherein the inflexion point of the first base surface is located longitudinally between the first outer end and the second inner end, wherein the inflexion point of the second base surface is located longitudinally between the second outer end and the first inner end.

12. The anvil of claim 1 , wherein the anvil has a linear anvil body that defines the tissue contacting surface, wherein the staple pockets are arranged linearly on the tissue contacting surface.

13. The anvil of claim 1 , wherein the anvil has a circular anvil body that defines the tissue contacting surface, wherein the staple pockets are arranged annularly on the tissue contacting surface.

14. A surgical instrument comprising:

(a) a body; and

(b) an end effector arranged distally of the body, wherein the end effector includes:

(i) a staple cartridge operable to eject a plurality of staples, and

(ii) the anvil of claim 1 , wherein the anvil is configured to clamp tissue against the staple cartridge and deform the staples ejected therefrom.

15. The surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein the end effector further includes a knife operable to translate distally through the staple cartridge to cut the clamped tissue.

16. An anvil configured to deform surgical staples ejected by a staple cartridge of a surgical stapler, comprising:

(a) a tissue contacting surface configured to contact tissue positioned between the anvil and the staple cartridge of the surgical stapler; and
