Abstract

Certain embodiments described herein are directed to ion detectors and systems. In some examples, the ion detector can include a plurality of dynodes, in which one or more of the dynodes are coupled to an electrometer. In other configurations, each dynode can be coupled to a respective electrometer. Methods using the ion detectors are also described.

Claims (20)

1. An ion detector comprising an electron multiplier comprising a plurality of dynodes each configured to amplify an electron signal representative of ions received by the ion detector, wherein at least two of the plurality of dynodes are electrically coupled to a respective electrometer, and wherein the ion detector comprises a circuit configured to terminate amplification of the electron signal at a saturated dynode of the plurality of dynodes.

2. The detector of claim 1 , in which the plurality of dynodes and the respective electrometers are in the same housing.

3. The detector of claim 1 , in which each respective electrometer is electrically coupled to a respective signal converter.

4. The detector of claim 3 , in which each of the respective signal converters is an analog-to-digital converter.

5. The detector of claim 4 , in which each of the analog-to-digital converters is configured to electrically couple to a processor.

6. The detector of claim 4 , further comprising a respective power converter electrically coupled to each respective electrometer and analog-to-digital converter pair.

7. The detector of claim 1 , further comprising a processor electrically coupled to each of the plurality of dynodes and configured to prevent a current overload at at least one dynode of the plurality of dynodes.

8. The detector of claim 7 , in which the processor is configured to alter the voltage at or downstream of the saturated dynode to terminate amplification of the electron signal at the saturated dynode.

9. The detector of claim 8 , in which the processor is configured to invert the polarity of a voltage of at least one dynode downstream of the saturated dynode.

10. The detector of claim 7 , in which the processor is configured to prevent any substantial secondary electron emission from at least one dynode downstream of the saturated dynode.

11. The detector of claim 1 , wherein every other dynode of the plurality of dynodes is electrically coupled to a respective electrometer.

12. The detector of claim 11 , in which the plurality of dynodes and the respective electrometers are in the same housing.

13. The detector of claim 11 , in which each respective electrometer is electrically coupled to a respective signal converter.

14. The detector of claim 13 , in which each of the respective signal converters is an analog-to-digital converter.

15. The detector of claim 14 , in which each of the analog-to-digital converters is electrically coupled to a processor.

16. The detector of claim 14 , further comprising a respective power converter electrically coupled to each respective electrometer and analog-to-digital converter pair.

17. The detector of claim 11 , wherein every third dynode of the plurality of dynodes is electrically coupled to a respective electrometer.

18. The detector of claim 11 , wherein every fourth dynode of the plurality of dynodes is electrically coupled to a respective electrometer.

19. The detector of claim 11 , wherein every fifth dynode of the plurality of dynodes is electrically coupled to a respective electrometer.

20. The detector of claim 11 , wherein a dynode in the middle of the plurality of dynodes is electrically coupled to a first electrometer, and wherein a dynode downstream from the dynode in the middle of the plurality of dynodes is electrically coupled to a second electrometer.
