Compliance control stitching in substrate materials
Compliance control stitch patterns sewn or embroidered into biotextile or medical textile substrates impart reinforcing strength, and stretch resistance and control into such substrates. Compliance control stitch patterns may be customizable to particular patients, substrate implantation sites, particular degenerative or diseased conditions, or desired time frames. Substrates having compliance control stitch patterns sewn or embroidered into them may be used in tissue repair or tissue reconstruction applications.
1. An implant for repairing or reconstructing soft tissue in the body of a subject in need thereof, the implant comprising:
a substrate comprising a biotextile or a medical textile; and
a first compliance control stitch pattern and a second compliance control stitch pattern sewn or embroidered into the substrate to provide the implant with a peak compliance strain of between 10% and 30% at a load of 16 Newtons per centimeter (N/cm), each of the first and second compliance control stitch patterns having a plurality of angle vertices, wherein the angle vertices of the first compliance control stitch pattern interlock with corresponding angle vertices of the second compliance control stitch pattern to form a grid.
2. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises a collagen sheet.
3. The implant of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second compliance control stitch patterns have a zig-zag pattern.
4. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the implant is a hernia repair implant.
5. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the implant is a breast reconstruction implant.
6. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises a biotextile, and the biotextile comprises an extracellular matrix.
7. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises a medical textile comprising a biocompatible polymer.
8. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises a medical textile comprising polypropylene, polyethylene, or polypropylene and polyethylene.
9. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises multiple collagen sheets.
10. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first and second compliance control stitch patterns comprise monofilament threads or yarns comprising polyethylene, polypropylene, or polyethylene and polypropylene.
11. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first compliance control stitch pattern has a higher density than the second compliance control stitch pattern.
12. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first and second compliance control stitch patterns are arranged in a biaxial, triaxial, or quadaxial grid.
13. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the second compliance control stitch pattern is oriented in a different direction than the first compliance control stitch pattern.
14. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first and second compliance control stitch patterns are sewn or embroidered into one layer.
15. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first compliance control stitch pattern and the second compliance control stitch pattern are sewn or embroidered into a plurality of layers.
16. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first compliance control stitch pattern is sewn or embroidered into a first layer, wherein the second compliance control stitch pattern is sewn or embroidered into a second layer.
17. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first compliance control stitch pattern is sewn or embroidered into an end region of the substrate, and the second compliance control stitch pattern is sewn or embroidered into a middle region of the substrate.
18. An implant for repairing or reconstructing soft tissue in the body of a subject in need thereof, the implant comprising:
a substrate comprising a biotextile or a medical textile; and
two or more compliance control stitch patterns sewn or embroidered into the substrate to provide the implant with a peak compliance strain of between 10% and 30% at a load of 16 Newtons per centimeter (N/cm), the two or more compliance control stitch patterns comprises a first compliance control stitch pattern and a second compliance control stitch pattern each having a zig-zag shape with angle vertices, wherein the angle vertices of the first compliance control stitch pattern overlap with corresponding angle vertices of the second compliance control stitch pattern to form a grid pattern in the substrate.
19. The implant of claim 18 , wherein at least one of the two or more compliance control stitch patterns comprises thread or yarn that is bioresorbable, and wherein the peak compliance strain of the implant changes over time.
20. The implant of claim 17 , wherein the implant is a hernia repair implant or a breast reconstruction implant.
