Secure transfer of previously broadcasted content
A method and apparatus for secure transfer of previously broadcasted content enables the secure transfer of previously broadcasted content between DVRs on a computer network.
1. A method, comprising:
one or more servers:
sending, to a device remote from the one or more servers, a web page that includes a selectable list, the selectable list comprising previously broadcasted content;
receiving, by the one or more servers, a selection of a particular previously broadcasted content from the selectable list;
receiving, from the device, a request for delivery of the particular previously broadcasted content;
identifying a plurality of networked digital video recorder (DVR) devices that each recorded the particular previously broadcasted content;
identifying a bandwidth associated with each DVR device of the plurality of networked DVR devices;
creating a pool of networked DVR devices by selecting a subset of the plurality of networked DVR devices that does not include DVR devices associated with a low bandwidth;
dividing the particular previously broadcasted content into a plurality of portions of the particular previously broadcasted content and assigning each portion of the plurality of portions for transmission by a networked DVR device from the pool of networked DVR devices, wherein each of the plurality of portions has respective placement data describing its correct placement within the previously broadcasted content;
generating a plurality of requests that each comprise a command to transmit from each of the pool of networked DVR devices to the device the assigned portion of the plurality of portions of the particular previously broadcasted content recorded by the corresponding one of the pool of networked DVR devices and respective placement data for each assigned portion; and
communicating, to each of the pool of networked DVR devices, a respective request of the plurality of requests.
2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising delivering of the plurality of consecutive portions of the particular previously broadcasted content by a portion of the plurality of networked DVR devices to the device.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more servers determine whether the device is authorized to receive the particular previously broadcasted content.
4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
sending, by the one or more servers, to the device, a web page that includes an estimated amount of time it will take for the device to obtain the particular previously broadcasted content.
5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
sending, by the one or more servers, to the device, a web page that includes a number of networked DVR devices that have the particular previously broadcasted content stored.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generating a plurality of requests further comprises designating a portion of the particular previously broadcasted content.
7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
detecting that one of the plurality of networked DVR devices is offline;
generating a second plurality of requests that each comprise a command to transmit from each of a second plurality of networked DVR devices a respective portion of the particular previously broadcasted content to the device, the second plurality of networked DVR devices not including the one of the plurality of networked DVR devices detected to be offline; and
communicating, to each of the second plurality of networked DVR devices, a respective request of the second plurality of requests.
8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising delivering of the plurality of consecutive portions of the particular previously broadcasted content by a portion of the second plurality of networked DVR devices to the device.
9. A system comprising:
one or more servers comprising memory and control circuitry, implemented at least partially in hardware, that:
send, to a device remote from the one or more servers, a web page that includes a selectable list, the selectable list comprising previously broadcasted content;
receive, by the one or more servers, a selection of a particular previously broadcasted content from the selectable list;
receive, from the device, a request for delivery of the particular previously broadcasted content;
identify a plurality of networked digital video recorder (DVR) devices that each recorded the particular previously broadcasted content and store the identification in memory;
identify a bandwidth associated with each DVR device of the plurality of networked DVR devices;
create a pool of networked DVR devices by selecting a subset of the plurality of networked DVR devices that does not include DVR devices associated with a low bandwidth;
divide the particular previously broadcasted content into a plurality of portions of the particular previously broadcasted content and assign each portion of the plurality of portions for transmission by a networked DVR device from the pool of networked DVR devices, wherein each of the plurality of portions has respective placement data describing its correct placement within the previously broadcasted content;
generate a plurality of requests that each comprise a command to transmit from each of the pool of networked DVR devices to the device the assigned portion of the plurality of portions of the particular previously broadcasted content recorded by the corresponding one of the pool of networked DVR devices and respective placement data for each assigned portion; and
communicate, to each of the pool of networked DVR devices, a respective request of the plurality of requests.
10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more servers determine whether the device is authorized to receive the particular previously broadcasted content.
11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more servers:
send, by the one or more servers, to the device, a web page that includes an estimated amount of time it will take for the device to obtain the particular previously broadcasted content.
12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more servers:
send, by the one or more servers, to the device, a web page that includes a number of networked DVR devices that have the particular previously broadcasted content stored.
13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more servers:
detect that one of the plurality of networked DVR devices is offline;
generate a second plurality of requests that each comprise a command to transmit from each of a second plurality of networked DVR devices a respective portion of the particular previously broadcasted content to the device, the second plurality of networked DVR devices not including the one of the plurality of networked DVR devices detected to be offline; and
communicate, to each of the second plurality of networked DVR devices, a respective request of the second plurality of requests.
14. A method, comprising:
one or more servers:
communicating, to a device remote from the one or more servers, data identifying previously broadcasted content;
receiving, from the device, a request for delivery of the particular previously broadcasted content;
identifying a plurality of networked digital video recorder (DVR) devices that each recorded the particular previously broadcasted content;
identifying a bandwidth associated with each DVR device of the plurality of networked DVR devices;
creating a pool of networked DVR devices by selecting a subset of the plurality of networked DVR devices that does not include DVR devices associated with a low bandwidth;
dividing the particular previously broadcasted content into a plurality of portions of the particular previously broadcasted content and assigning each portion of the plurality of portions for transmission by a networked DVR device from the pool of networked DVR devices, wherein each of the plurality of portions has respective placement data describing its correct placement within the previously broadcasted content;
