Abstract

At least one embodiment is directed to a method for automatically activating ambient sound pass-through in an earphone in response to a detected keyword in the ambient sound field of the earphone user, the steps of the method comprising at least receiving at least one ambient sound microphone (ASM) signal; receiving at least one audio content (AC) signal; and comparing the ASM signal to a keyword and if the ASM signal matches a keyword then an AC gain is created.

Claims (42)

1. A method for activating ambient sound pass-through in an earphone in response to a detected keyword in the ambient sound field of the earphone user, the steps of the method comprising:

receiving at least one ambient sound microphone (ASM) signal;

receiving at least one audio content (AC) signal;

identifying if a keyword is matched to a portion of the ASM signal, wherein the keyword is matched to the portion of the ASM signal when temporal or spectral patterns of the keyword and the portion of the ASM signal match within a threshold average value; and

generating an ASM gain if a keyword is matched to the portion of the ASM signal; and

applying the ASM gain to the ASM signal until a new keyword is detected or manually adjusted.

2. The method according to claim 1 further including:

Where, if the ASM gain is generated, applying the ASM gain to the ASM signal to generate a modified ASM signal.

3. The method according to claim 2 further including:

generating an audio content signal gain.

4. The method according to claim 3 , where if the portion of the ASM signal matches a keyword then the audio content signal gain value is changed or maintained.

5. The method according to claim 4 further including:

applying the audio content signal gain to the audio content signal to generate a modified audio content (AC) signal.

6. The method according to claim 5 further including:

mixing the modified AC signal and modified ASM signals to generate a mixed signal.

7. The method according to claim 6 further including:

sending the mixed signal to a speaker.

8. The method according to claim 7 where the keywords include at least one of a first name, a surname, a familiar or truncated form of the first name or surname, a nickname for the earphone wearer, a phrase, and an emergency keyword.

9. A method for activating ambient sound pass-through in an earphone in response to a detected set of keyword in the ambient sound field of the earphone user, the steps of the method comprising:

receiving at least one ambient sound microphone (ASM) signal;

receiving at least one audio content (AC) signal;

comparing the ASM signal to a set of keywords and if the ASM signal matches the set of keywords then an AC gain is created and an ASM gain is created;

comparing the AC gain to a previous AC gain to determine if the AC gain is increasing or decreasing;

comparing the ASM gain to a previous ASM gain to determine if the ASM gain is increasing or decreasing;

applying the AC gain to the AC signal gradually at a rate between 5-30 dB/sec if increasing and a range −5 to −30 dB/sec if decreasing, generating a modified AC signal;

applying the ASM gain to the ASM signal gradually at a rate between 5-30 dB/sec if increasing and a range −5 to −30 dB/sec if decreasing, generating a modified ASM signal;

mixing the modified AC signal and modified ASM signals to generated a mixed signal; and

sending the mixed signal to a speaker.

10. The method according to claim 9 , where the ASM gain is increased if the AC gain is decreased.

11. The method according to claim 10 , where the ASM gain is decreased if the AC gain is increased.

12. A device capable of receiving and identifying acoustic keywords comprising:

an ambient microphone configured to generate an ambient signal;

an ear canal microphone configured to generate an ear canal signal;

a speaker configured to receive an acoustic signal;

a processor; and

processor readable memory, where acoustic characteristics of at least five verbal keywords are stored in the processor readable memory, where the processor is configured to identify an acoustic keyword signal by comparing the acoustic characteristics of the at least five verbal keywords to an acoustic signal sent from the ambient microphone, wherein the acoustic keyword signal is identified in the acoustic signal when temporal or spectral patterns of at least one of the five verbal keywords and the acoustic signal match within a threshold average value, where the processor has been configured to initiate at least one of the following based upon the keyword identified: initiate an increase gain to the ambient signal, initiate a decrease gain to the acoustic signal sent to the speaker, initiate a decrease gain to the ambient signal, and initiate an increase gain to the acoustic signal sent to the speaker, where the increase or decrease gain is applied until a new keyword is identified or manually changed.

13. The device according to claim 12 where the device is a wireless earphone.

14. The device according to claim 13 , where the processor is contained in a phone that wirelessly connects to the earphone.

15. The device according to claim 13 , where the processor readable memory is RAM stored on the earphone.

16. The device according to claim 14 , where the processor readable memory is RAM stored on the phone.

17. The device according to claim 13 , where the earphone additionally includes: an occluding portion, where the occluding portion provides a level of sound isolation between an ear canal region and an ambient environment.

18. The device according to claim 17 , where the occluding portion is an eartip that provides a sound isolation at least 10 dB when the eartip is inserted into an ear canal.
