Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed herein for selecting alternate routes with fewer directions during vehicle navigation. The disclosed techniques herein determine directions from route data and direction timestamps for each of the directions. For each direction, a corresponding media asset from media assets in a playlist having a media asset duration that matches a direction duration is determined. The direction duration is the time difference between the direction timestamp and a subsequent direction timestamp.

Claims (46)

1. A method for selecting alternate routes with fewer directions during vehicle navigation, the method comprising:

determining a plurality of travel routes from route data, wherein each of the plurality of travel routes has one or more directions;

determining a quickest route with the smallest travel duration from the plurality of travel routes;

determining whether an alternate route, different than the quickest route, from the plurality of travel routes has a travel duration matching the travel duration of the quickest route within a predefined time threshold;

in response to the determination that the alternate route has the travel duration matching the travel duration of the quickest route within the predefined time threshold:

determining whether the number of directions of the alternate route are fewer than the number of directions of the quickest route; and

in response to the determination that the number of directions of the alternate route are fewer than the number of directions of the quickest route, selecting the alternate route for navigation.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predefined time threshold is 5 minutes.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predefined time threshold is provided by user input.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving appointment information comprising location and times for one or more appointments;

determining whether a time difference between an estimated arrival time of the alternate route and a time for an appointment from the one or more appointments is within an appointment threshold; and

in response to the determination that the time difference between the estimated arrival time of the alternate route and the time for the appointment from the one or more appointments is within the appointment threshold, selecting another alternate route, different from the alternate route, from the plurality of travel routes.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the another alternate route is the quickest route.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving appointment information comprising location and times for one or more appointments;

determining whether one of the one or more appointments has a high priority status; and

in response to the determination that the one of the one or more appointments has a high priority status, selecting another alternate route, different from the alternate route, from the plurality of travel routes.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the another alternate route is the quickest route.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the route data is received from a navigation application.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining whether the number of directions of the alternate route are fewer than the number of directions of the quickest route comprises determining whether the number of directions of the alternate route is fewer than a minimum direction threshold.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the minimum direction threshold is set by user instruction.

11. A system for selecting alternate routes with fewer directions during vehicle navigation, comprising:

memory configured to store route data;

control circuitry configured to:

determine a plurality of travel routes from route data, wherein each of the plurality of travel routes has one or more directions;

determine a quickest route with the smallest travel duration from the plurality of travel routes;

determine whether an alternate route, different than the quickest route, from the plurality of travel routes has a travel duration matching the travel duration of the quickest route within a predefined time threshold;

in response to the determination that the alternate route has the travel duration matching the travel duration of the quickest route within the predefined time threshold:

determine whether the number of directions of the alternate route are fewer than the number of directions of the quickest route; and

in response to the determination that the number of directions of the alternate route are fewer than the number of directions of the quickest route, select the alternate route for navigation.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the predefined time threshold is 5 minutes.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the predefined time threshold is provided by user input.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein control circuitry is further configured to:

receive appointment information comprising location and times for one or more appointments;

determine whether a time difference between an estimated arrival time of the alternate route and a time for an appointment from the one or more appointments is within an appointment threshold; and

in response to the determination that the time difference between the estimated arrival time of the alternate route and the time for the appointment from the one or more appointments is within the appointment threshold, select another alternate route, different from the alternate route, from the plurality of travel routes.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the another alternate route is the quickest route.

16. The system of claim 11 , further comprising:

receive appointment information comprising location and times for one or more appointments;

determine whether one of the one or more appointments has a high priority status; and

in response to the determination that the one of the one or more appointments has a high priority status, select another alternate route, different from the alternate route, from the plurality of travel routes.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the another alternate route is the quickest route.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the route data is received from a navigation application.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry comprises, when determining whether the number of directions of the alternate route are fewer than the number of directions of the quickest route, to determine whether the number of directions of the alternate route is fewer than a minimum direction threshold.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the minimum direction threshold is set by user instruction.
