Abstract

A lens comprises a light receiving side comprising grooves for receiving light emitting diodes, the grooves defined by a central refractive region and walls comprising total internal reflection faces; and a light extraction side opposite the light receiving side, the light extraction side comprising refractive extraction surfaces, total internal reflection extraction surfaces, or combinations thereof. In some embodiments, luminaire comprises an array of light emitting diodes, and the lens positioned over the array of light emitting diodes.

Claims (43)

1. A lens comprising:

a light receiving side comprising grooves for receiving light emitting diodes, the grooves defined by a central refractive region and walls comprising total internal reflection faces; and

a light extraction side opposite the light receiving side, the light extraction side comprising refractive extraction surfaces, total internal reflection extraction surfaces, or combinations thereof, wherein the central refractive region and total internal reflection faces direct light received by the lens to the refractive extraction surfaces and the total internal reflection extraction surfaces.

2. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the grooves are arranged in a concentric format.

3. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the grooves are arranged in a linear format.

4. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the grooves are arranged in a recti-linear format.

5. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the light extraction side comprises facets including the total internal reflection extraction surfaces.

6. The lens of claim 5 , wherein the facets comprise a triangular cross-section.

7. The lens of claim 5 , wherein the facets comprise a splined shape cross-section.

8. The lens of claim 5 , wherein adjacent grooves comprise the same number of facets on the light extraction side.

9. The lens of claim 5 , wherein adjacent grooves comprise differing numbers of facets on the light extraction side.

10. The lens of claim 5 , wherein the facets are concentric with one another.

11. The lens of claim 5 , wherein the facets are parallel to one another.

12. The lens of claim 5 , wherein the facets are orthogonal or have an angle between 0 and 90 degrees compared to the grooves.

13. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the central refractive region comprises a convex surface.

14. The lens of claim 1 , wherein the central refractive region and the total internal reflection faces direct the light received by the lens in a direction parallel to a central vertical axis of the lens.

15. The lens of claim 14 , wherein the refractive extraction surfaces and the total internal reflection extraction surfaces redirect the light received from the central refractive region and the total internal reflection faces.

16. The lens of claim 15 , wherein the lens provides a lighting distribution having spacing criteria 0.7 to 1.2.

17. The lens of claim 15 , wherein the lens provides a lighting distribution having spacing criteria 1.2 to 1.6.

18. The lens of claim 15 , wherein the lens provides a lighting distribution having spacing criteria 1.6 to 2.1.

19. The lens of claim 15 , wherein the lens provides a lighting distribution having spacing criteria>2.1.

20. The lens of claim 15 , wherein the redirected light provides an asymmetric lighting distribution.

21. A luminaire comprising:

an array of light emitting diodes; and

a lens positioned over the array of light emitting diodes, wherein the lens comprises a light receiving side including grooves for receiving light emitting diodes, the grooves defined by a central refractive region and walls comprising total internal reflection faces, and a light extraction side opposite the light receiving side, the light extraction side comprising refractive extraction surfaces, total internal reflection extraction surfaces, or combinations thereof, wherein the light extraction side comprises facets including the total internal reflection extraction surfaces.

22. The luminaire of claim 21 , wherein the grooves are arranged in a concentric format.

23. The luminaire of claim 21 , wherein the grooves are arranged in a linear format.

24. The luminaire of claim 21 , wherein the grooves are arranged in a recti-linear format.

25. The luminaire of claim 21 , wherein the central refractive region and the total internal reflection faces direct the light received by the lens from the light emitting diodes in a direction parallel to nadir of the luminaire.

26. The luminaire of claim 25 , wherein the refractive extraction surfaces and the total internal reflection extraction surfaces redirect the light received from the central refractive region and the total internal reflection faces to provide a lighting distribution of the luminaire.

27. The luminaire of claim 26 , wherein the lighting distribution exhibits spacing criteria 0.7 to 1.2.

28. The luminaire of claim 26 , wherein the lighting distribution exhibits spacing criteria 1.2 to 1.6.

29. The luminaire of claim 26 , wherein the lighting distribution exhibits spacing criteria 1.6 to 2.1.

30. The luminaire of claim 26 , wherein the lighting distribution exhibits spacing criteria>2.1.

31. The luminaire of claim 26 , wherein the lighting distribution is asymmetric.

32. The luminaire of claim 26 further comprising a diffuser positioned over the lens.

33. The luminaire of claim 32 , wherein the lighting distribution has uniform luminance over the diffuser.

34. The luminaire of claim 32 further comprising a glare shield.

35. The luminaire of claim 34 , wherein 3 to 8 percent of lumens of the lighting distribution are classified as uplighting.

36. The luminaire of claim 32 , wherein 8 to 20 percent of lumens of the lighting distribution are classified as uplighting.
