Abstract

An example of a method of enabling medical fluid transfer between a source container and a destination container can comprise the steps of providing a closed-system fluid transfer module comprising a first closeable, resealable medical connector and a second closeable, resealable medical connector, a multidirectional fluid control valve with a driving interface configured to interface with an electromechanical driver of an electronic medical fluid transfer device, and an intermediate container or an intermediate pumping region; and instructing a user to couple the closed-system fluid transfer module to the electronic medical fluid transfer device.

Claims (22)

1. A method of enabling medical fluid transfer between a source container and a destination container, the method comprising the steps of:

providing an electronic medical fluid transfer device with a computer processor being configured to control a first electromechanical driver and a second electromechanical driver;

providing a fluid transfer module comprising a multidirectional fluid control valve, the fluid transfer module comprising:

an inlet port,

an outlet port,

an intermediate conduit leading to an intermediate pumping region, and

a rotatable driving interface being configured to interface with the first electromechanical driver;

removably attaching the fluid transfer module to the electronic medical fluid transfer device so as to provide a first functional coupling between the first electromechanical driver and the multidirectional fluid control valve and to provide a second functional coupling between the second electromechanical driver and the intermediate pumping region;

actuating the multidirectional fluid control valve with the first electromechanical driver to position the multidirectional fluid control valve so as to open a fluid pathway between the intermediate pumping region and a conduit leading toward the destination container;

afterward actuating the intermediate pumping region with the second electromechanical driver to lower pressure or create a partial vacuum within the intermediate pumping region to draw air through the fluid pathway from the conduit and into the intermediate pumping region;

afterward actuating the multidirectional fluid control valve with the first electromechanical driver to position the multidirectional fluid control valve so as to close the fluid pathway between the intermediate pumping region and the conduit leading to the destination container and to open a fluid pathway between the source container and the intermediate pumping region;

afterward actuating the intermediate pumping region with the second electromechanical driver to draw medical fluid from the source container and into the intermediate pumping region;

afterward actuating the multidirectional fluid control valve with the first electromechanical driver to position the multidirectional fluid control valve so as to close the fluid pathway between the source container and the intermediate pumping region and to open the fluid pathway between the intermediate pumping region and the conduit leading to the destination container; and

afterward transferring the medical fluid from the intermediate pumping region to the destination container with the second electromechanical driver.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising using an electronic sensor to detect a region of air, vacuum, or partial vacuum in the fluid transfer module.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the electronic sensor is an acoustic sensor.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising purging the detected region of air, vacuum, or partial vacuum from the fluid transfer module.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of purging comprises transferring the region of air, vacuum, or partial vacuum to the source container.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprises determining one or more features of contents of the fluid transfer module, wherein an electronic sensor is provided to determine the one or more features.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more features comprising a volume of fluid.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more features comprises at least one of a type of fluid, a concentration of fluid, a color of fluid, or a viscosity of fluid.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the electronic sensor comprises a camera.
