Abstract

A cut-on-contact broadhead having a plurality of deployable blades. Each of the plurality of blades is pivotally coupled to a ferrule configured for attaching the broadhead to a shaft of an arrow or a bolt. Each of the plurality of blades includes a tip, an impact region, a first cutting edge, and a second cutting edge. During flight, blades are in a fully retracted state forming a distal tip of the broadhead having sharp cutting edges defined at least in part by the first cutting edges of the blades. Upon impact, the distal tip of the broadhead creates a bore in the target. As the broadhead penetrates the target, the plurality of blades are deployed into a swept-back configuration exposing the second cutting edge of each blade. The second cutting edges expand the bore initiated by the distal tip of the broadhead and create a passage in the target.

Claims (62)

1. A broadhead, comprising:

a ferrule comprising:

a plurality of recesses; and

a plurality of channels;

a plurality of deployable blades, each blade comprising:

a tip;

a first cutting edge extending from the tip; and

a second cutting edge extending from the tip; and

a chisel tip comprising cutting edges defined at least in part by the first cutting edge of each blade while the plurality of blades are retained in a retracted configuration; wherein,

each channel is disposed between adjacent recesses; and

at least a portion of each blade is disposed within one of the plurality of channels and pivotally coupled to the ferrule.

2. The broadhead of claim 1 , comprising a collar configured for retaining the plurality of blades in the retracted configuration.

3. The broadhead of claim 1 , wherein the first cutting edge of each of the plurality of blades is configured for creating a bore in a target.

4. The broadhead of claim 1 , wherein the chisel tip creates a bore in a target.

5. The broadhead of claim 1 , wherein a tip of the chisel tip is distal of a distal end of the ferrule.

6. The broadhead of claim 1 , wherein a tip of the chisel tip is proximate a distal end of the ferrule.

7. The broadhead of claim 1 , wherein a tip of the chisel tip is proximal of a distal end of the ferrule.

8. The broadhead of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of blades deploy into a swept-back configuration exposing their respective second cutting edges when a target imparts a force on an impact region of the blades.

9. The broadhead of claim 8 , wherein each blade of the plurality of blades traverses a plane substantially orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the broadhead.

10. The broadhead of claim 1 , wherein the second cutting edge of each of the plurality of blades is configured for widening a bore in a target.

11. The broadhead of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of recesses is configured for relieving pressure as the broadhead penetrates a target.

12. The broadhead of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of channels is configured for relieving pressure as the broadhead penetrates a target.

13. A broadhead, comprising:

a ferrule comprising a plurality of channels; and

a plurality of deployable blades, each blade comprising:

a tip;

a first cutting edge extending from the tip; and

a second cutting edge extending from the tip;

wherein, at least a portion of each blade is disposed within one of the plurality of channels and pivotally coupled to the ferrule.

14. The broadhead of claim 13 , comprising a chisel tip comprising cutting edges defined at least in part by the first cutting edge of each blade while the plurality of blades are retained in a retracted configuration.

15. The broadhead of claim 14 , comprising a collar configured for retaining the plurality of blades in the retracted configuration.

16. The broadhead of claim 14 , wherein a tip of the chisel tip is distal of a distal end of the ferrule.

17. The broadhead of claim 14 , wherein a tip of the chisel tip is proximate a distal end of the ferrule.

18. The broadhead of claim 14 , wherein a tip of the chisel tip is proximal of a distal end of the ferrule.

19. The broadhead of claim 14 , wherein the chisel tip creates a bore in a target.

20. The broadhead of claim 13 , wherein the first cutting edge of each of the plurality of blades is configured for creating a bore in a target.

21. The broadhead of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of blades deploy into a swept-back configuration exposing their respective second cutting edges when a target imparts a force on an impact region of the blades.

22. The broadhead of claim 21 , wherein each blade of the plurality of blades traverses a plane substantially orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the broadhead.

23. The broadhead of claim 13 , wherein the second cutting edge of each of the plurality of blades is configured for widening a bore in a target.

24. The broadhead of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the plurality of channels is configured for relieving fluid pressure.

25. The broadhead of claim 13 , comprising a plurality of recesses, each recess disposed between adjacent channels.

26. The broadhead of claim 25 , wherein at least one of the plurality of recesses is configured for relieving fluid pressure.

27. A broadhead, comprising:

a ferrule comprising a plurality of recesses; and

a plurality of deployable blades, each blade comprising:

a tip;

a first cutting edge extending from the tip; and

a second cutting edge extending from the tip;

wherein, at least a portion of each blade is disposed between adjacent recesses and pivotally coupled to the ferrule.

28. The broadhead of claim 27 , comprising a chisel tip comprising cutting edges defined at least in part by the first cutting edge of each blade while the plurality of blades are retained in a retracted configuration.

29. The broadhead of claim 28 , comprising a collar configured for retaining the plurality of blades in the retracted configuration.

30. The broadhead of claim 28 , wherein a tip of the chisel tip is distal of a distal end of the ferrule.

31. The broadhead of claim 28 , wherein a tip of the chisel tip is proximate a distal end of the ferrule.

32. The broadhead of claim 28 , wherein a tip of the chisel tip is proximal of a distal end of the ferrule.

33. The broadhead of claim 28 , wherein the chisel tip creates a bore in a target.

34. The broadhead of claim 27 , wherein the first cutting edge of each of the plurality of blades is configured for creating a bore in a target.
