Abstract

An optical system for suppressing signal noise on an optical fiber, including an input power signal; a pump laser configured to receive the input power signal; a phase modulator coupled to the pump laser configured to modulate, in response to the input power signal, a phase of the pump laser to increase a stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold of the pump laser, wherein the pump laser is further configured to: increase a power at the pump laser to be greater than the SBS threshold; generate a back scattering power based on the power of the pump laser being greater than the increased SBS threshold; and limit an output power signal of the pump laser based on the generated back scattering power.

Claims (36)

1. A computer-implemented method for suppressing signal noise on an optical fiber, comprising:

receiving, at a pump laser, an input power signal;

in response to receiving the input power signal, at the pump laser:

modulating, by a phase modulator, a phase of the pump laser causing an optical fiber or nonlinear element to have a stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold;

increasing the SBS threshold of the pump laser based on modulating the phase of the pump laser, and

increasing a power of the pump laser to be greater than the increased SBS threshold;

generating, at the pump laser, a back scattering power based on the power of the pump laser being greater than the increased SBS threshold; and

limiting an output power signal of the pump laser based on the generated back scattering power.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein modulating the phase of the pump laser suppresses SBS within an optical fiber receiving an output signal from the pump laser.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein limiting the output power signal of the pump laser compensates for pump amplitude fluctuation of the pump laser.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the increased SBS threshold is 22 decibel-milliwatts (dbm).

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein increasing the SBS threshold of the pump laser includes increasing the SBS threshold from 15 dbm to 22 dbm.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein increasing the power of the pump laser to be greater than the increased SBS threshold includes increasing the power of the pump laser to be greater than 22 dbm.

7. An optical system for suppressing signal noise on an optical fiber, comprising:

an input power signal;

a pump laser causing an optical fiber or nonlinear element to have a stimulated Brillouin scattering (SB) threshold and being configured to receive the input power signal;

a phase modulator coupled to the pump laser configured to modulate, in response to the input power signal, a phase of the pump laser to increase the SBS threshold of the pump laser,

wherein the pump laser is further configured to:

increase a power at the pump laser to be greater than the SBS threshold;

generate a back scattering power based on the power of the pump laser being greater than the increased SBS threshold; and

limit an output power signal of the pump laser based on the generated back scattering power.

8. The optical system of claim 7 , wherein modulating the phase of the pump laser suppresses SBS within an optical fiber receiving an output signal from the pump laser.

9. The optical system of claim 7 , wherein limiting the output power signal of the pump laser compensates for pump amplitude fluctuation of the pump laser.

10. The optical system of claim 7 , wherein the increased SBS threshold is 22 decibel-milliwatts (dbm).

11. The optical system of claim 7 , wherein increasing the SBS threshold of the pump laser includes increasing the SBS threshold from 15 dbm to 22 dbm.

12. The optical system of claim 7 , wherein increasing the power of the pump laser to be greater than the increased SBS threshold includes increasing the power of the pump laser to be greater than 22 dbm.

13. A computer-implemented method for suppressing signal noise on an optical fiber, comprising:

receiving, at a pump laser, an input power signal;

in response to receiving the input power signal, at the pump laser:

modulating, by a phase modulator, a phase of the pump laser to suppress a stimulated Brillouin scattering at the pump laser causing an optical fiber or nonlinear element to have a stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold;

increasing the SBS threshold of the pump laser from 15 dbm to 22 dbm based on modulating the phase of the pump laser, and

increasing a power of the pump laser to be greater than the increased SBS threshold;

generating, at the pump laser, a back scattering power based on the power of the pump laser being greater than the increased SBS threshold; and

limiting an output power signal of the pump laser based on the generated back scattering power.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 13 , wherein limiting the output power signal of the pump laser compensates for pump amplitude fluctuation of the pump laser.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 13 , wherein increasing the power of the pump laser to be greater than the increased SBS threshold includes increasing the power of the pump laser to be greater than 22 dbm.
