Abstract

Devices used to cue a user to take a step when experiencing a walking disorder, such as a freezing of gait episode, are disclosed. The devices are configured to cue the user with a visual and/or audible cue. The devices include an activation module and a cueing module. The cueing module includes a metronome and a laser light source. The devices are mounted on an assistive mobility device or on the user.

Claims (26)

1. A daily activity assist device to assist a subject with walking, comprising:

a housing comprising:

a metronome having an adjustable cadence rate that is settable to a cadence that corresponds to a walking speed of the subject, and

a cadence control for setting the adjustable cadence rate; and

a laser coupled to the housing for emitting a projection onto a walking surface.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the adjustable cadence rate is settable from about 0 beats per minute to about 250 beats per minute.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the adjustable cadence rate is settable from about 20 beats per minute to about 100 beats per minute.

4. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a motion sensor, wherein the motion sensor powers on the device upon detection of motion.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the motion sensor activates the laser upon detection of motion.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the cadence control comprises a knob for adjusting the adjustable cadence rate.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the knob comprises a potentiometer.

8. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a speaker for emission of a metronome beat, the device further comprising a volume knob for adjusting a volume of the metronome beat emitted from the speaker.

The device of claim 8 , further comprising a cueing module, the cueing module comprising the laser, and the speaker, wherein the laser is disposed on a cueing module and within a holder, wherein the laser is rotatable relative to a central longitudinal axis of the cueing module, and wherein the device further comprises an activation module comprising the volume knob and the housing comprising the cadence control.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the activation module further comprises a light intensity knob for adjusting an intensity of the laser.

11. The device of claim 9 , wherein the cadence control further comprises a metronome knob for adjusting the adjustable cadence rate.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the metronome knob comprises a potentiometer.

13. The device of claim 9 , wherein the activation module and the cueing module are in wireless communication with one another.

14. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a light sensor, wherein the light sensor detects ambient light levels and adjusts an intensity of the laser.

15. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a light intensity knob for adjusting an intensity of the laser.

16. The device of claim 1 , further comprising an external control device for wireless activation of the metronome and the laser.

17. The device of claim 1 , further comprising one or more sensors to monitor a user's walking speed, number of steps taken, number of FOG events, time utilization of the cueing device, or combinations thereof.

18. The device of claim 17 , further comprising a memory, wherein data collected by the one or more sensors is stored in the memory of the cueing device.

19. The device of claim 1 , wherein the metronome transmits a metronome beat at the adjustable cadence rate to an external device.

20. The device of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises a belt hook.

21. The device of claim 20 , wherein a projection angle of the laser is adjustable relative to a transverse longitudinal axis of the housing.

22. The device of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises a wrist securement band.
