Abstract

Imaging systems and methods are provided for detecting objects that may be hidden under clothing, ingested, inserted, or otherwise concealed on or in a person's body. An imaging assembly, e.g., X-ray source and X-ray detector, and mechanisms, e.g., a translational mechanism for vertically moving the imaging assembly, may be configured to reduce the overall form factor of such imaging systems, while still retaining an ability to perform full/complete imaging of a subject.

Claims (28)

1. A translational mechanism of a linescan system for vertically moving an X-ray detector and an X-ray source through a range of motion, the translational mechanism comprising:

a vertical guide within which an X-ray detector and an X-ray source are vertically moved from a first position to a second position, respectively, the vertical guide comprising a vertical path through which the X-ray detector and the X-ray source move;

a first actuator driving the vertical movement of the X-ray source at a first rate; and

a second actuator driving the vertical movement of the X-ray detector at a second rate, such that the X-ray detector is lower than the X-ray source at the first position and the X-ray detector is higher than the X-ray source at the second position;

wherein the X-ray detector and the X-ray source are vertically moved through the range of motion to capture X-ray signals generated during an imaging of an entirety of a subject; and

wherein the vertical guide is positioned within a housing, the housing comprising a base, the base comprising a top component on which the subject is placed during the imaging, and a bottom component, such that a space is formed between the top and the bottom components; wherein the X-ray detector is sized to fit within the space formed between the top and bottom components of the base of the housing.

2. The translational mechanism of the linescan system of claim 1 , wherein the X-ray detector and the X-ray source move through the vertical path in a geometric alignment, wherein the geometric alignment is maintained by a connecting member configured to join the X-ray detector with the X-ray source.

3. The translational mechanism of the linescan system of claim 1 , wherein the first position from which the X-ray detector is moved comprises a position within the vertical guide below the top component, and wherein the first position from which the X-ray source is moved comprises a position above the top component.

4. The translational mechanism of the linescan system of claim 1 , wherein the X-ray detector at the first position is angled upward and toward the X-ray source, such that the X-ray detector is positioned to detect an X-ray beam emitted by the X-ray source.

5. The translational mechanism of the linescan system of claim 1 , wherein the X-ray detector at the second position is angled downward and toward the X-ray source, such that the X-ray detector is positioned to detect an X-ray beam emitted by the X-ray source.

6. A translational mechanism for vertically moving an X-ray detector and an X-ray source through a range of motion, the translational mechanism comprising:

a vertical guide positioned within a housing, and within which an X-ray detector and an X-ray source are vertically moved from a first position to a second position within a first and second vertical paths, respectively, the housing comprising a base, the base comprising a top component on which the subject is placed during the imaging, and a bottom component, such that a space is formed between the top and the bottom components, the X-ray detector being sized to fit within the space formed between the top and bottom components of the base of the housing;

a first actuator driving the vertical movement of the X-ray source at a first rate, wherein a first cable is attached to the X-ray source at a first terminus and a first counterweight device at a second terminus;

a second actuator driving the vertical movement of the X-ray detector at a second rate, wherein a second cable is attached to the X-ray detector at a first terminus and a second counterweight device at the second terminus;

wherein the first position of the X-ray detector within the first vertical path is lower than the first position of the X-ray source within the second vertical path, and wherein the second position of the X-ray detector within the first vertical path is higher than the second position of the X-ray source within the second vertical path; and

wherein the X-ray detector and the X-ray source are vertically moved through the range of motion to capture a fan-beam of X-ray signals generated during an imaging of an entirety of a subject.

7. The translational mechanism of claim 6 , wherein the X-ray detector and the X-ray source move through the first and second vertical paths, respectively, in a geometric alignment, wherein the geometric alignment is maintained by a connecting member configured to join the X-ray detector with the X-ray source.

8. The translational mechanism of claim 6 , wherein the first position from which the X-ray detector is moved via the first vertical path comprises a position within the vertical guide below top component, and wherein the first position from which the X-ray source is moved via the second vertical path comprises a position above the top component.

9. The translational mechanism of claim 6 , wherein the X-ray detector at the first position is angled upward and toward the X-ray source, such that the X-ray detector is positioned to detect an X-ray beam emitted by the X-ray source.

10. The translational mechanism of claim 6 , wherein the X-ray detector at the second position is angled downward and toward the X-ray source, such that the X-ray detector is positioned to detect an X-ray beam emitted by the X-ray source.

11. The translational mechanism of claim 6 , wherein each of the first and second counterweight devices comprises a balancing device.

12. A translational mechanism for vertically moving a linescan system comprising an X-ray detector and an X-ray source, the translational mechanism comprising:

a vertical guide comprising a vertical path through and within which the X-ray detector and the X-ray source within are vertically moved within a first and second height range, respectively, the vertical guide being positioned within a housing, wherein the housing comprises a base, the base comprising a top component on which the subject is placed during the imaging, and a bottom component, such that a space is formed between the top and the bottom components, the X-ray detector being sized to fit within the space formed between the top and bottom components of the base of the housing;
