Abstract

Cure in place pressure sensitive adhesive compositions are described that comprise one or more of a bodying component, a structural diluent, a radical diluent as well as additives such as crosslinkers, external catalysts, photoinitiators and stabilizers/process aids. The bodying component can be acrylic or non-acrylic.

Claims (73)

1. A cure in place liquid comprising:

5-70 wt % of a bodying component comprising a non-acrylic base polymer having a molecular weight (Mw) of 1,000 to 500,000, selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyvinyl aromatics, polyurethanes, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyethers, and combinations thereof;

5-80 wt % of at least one structural diluent;

5-70 wt % of at least one radical addition diluent;

0-5.0 wt % of a first curative;

0-10 wt % of a second curative;

0-10 wt % photosensitizer; and

0-10 wt % stabilizer/process aid.

2. The cure in place liquid of claim 1 wherein the first curative is an external catalyst.

3. The cure in place liquid of claim 1 wherein the second curative is a photoinitiator.

4. The cure in place liquid of claim 1 wherein each of the first curative and the second curative are activatable by at least one of radiation, heat, moisture, pressure, ultrasound, exposure to chemical agents, and combinations thereof.

5. The cure in place liquid of claim 1 wherein the non-acrylic base polymer has a molecular weight (Mw) of 1,000 to 100,000.

6. The cure in place liquid of claim 5 wherein the non-acrylic base polymer has a molecular weight (Mw) of 1,000 to 50,000.

7. The cure in place liquid of claim 1 comprising:

10-15 wt % of a bodying component comprising non-acrylic polymer having a molecular weight (Mw) of 1,000 to 500,000, selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyvinyl aromatics, polyurethanes, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyethers, and combinations thereof;

45-60 wt % of at least one structural diluent;

30-40 wt % of at least one radical addition diluent;

0.01-2.0 wt % of a first curative;

0.01-10 wt % of a second curative;

0-10 wt % of photosensitizer; and

0-10 wt % stabilizer/process aid.

8. The cure in place liquid of claim 1 wherein the non-acrylic base polymer is a pre-polymerized non-acrylic backbone base polymer.

9. The cure in place liquid of claim 8 wherein the pre-polymerized non-acrylic backbone base polymer does not contain any ethylenic unsaturation along the polymer chain.

10. A construction comprising:

one or more substrates; and

the cure in place liquid of claim 1 disposed on the one or more substrates.

11. The cure in place liquid of claim 1 wherein the liquid upon exposure to a first stimulus exhibits an initial polymerized state including a pressure sensitive adhesive formed from the bodying component and the radical addition diluent.

12. The cure in place liquid of claim 11 wherein the first stimulus selected from the group consisting of radiation, heat, moisture, pressure, ultrasound, chemical exposure, and combinations thereof.

13. The cure in place liquid of claim 11 wherein the liquid upon exposure to a second stimulus exhibits a subsequent crosslinked state including a structural adhesive formed from the pressure sensitive adhesive and the structural diluent.

14. The cure in place liquid of claim 13 wherein the second stimulus selected from the group consisting of radiation, heat, moisture, pressure, ultrasound, chemical exposure, and combinations thereof.

15. The cure in place liquid of claim 1 wherein the bodying component and the radical addition diluent are selected to polymerize to a pressure sensitive adhesive in the presence of a first stimulus.

16. The cure in place liquid of claim 11 wherein the structural diluent is selected to be non-reactive with the bodying component and the radical addition diluent when the liquid is exposed to the first stimulus.

17. The cure in place liquid of claim 11 wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive and the structural diluent are selected to crosslink in the presence of a second stimulus.

18. The cure in place liquid of claim 13 wherein the first stimulus is different from the second stimulus.

19. A cure in place liquid comprising:

20-80 wt % of a bodying component comprising a base polymer having a molecular weight (Mw) of 1,000 to 500,000, selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyvinyl aromatics, polyurethanes, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyethers, and combinations thereof;

5-50 wt % of at least one structural diluent;

10-80 wt % of at least one radical addition diluent;

0-1.0 wt % crosslinker;

0-4.0 wt % of a first curative;

0.01-10 wt % of a second curative; and

0-10.0 wt % stabilizer/process aid.

20. The cure in place liquid of claim 19 wherein the first curative is an external catalyst.

21. The cure in place liquid of claim 19 wherein the second curative is a photoinitiator.

22. The cure in place liquid of claim 19 wherein each of the first curative and the second curative are activatable by at least one of radiation, heat, moisture, pressure, ultrasound, exposure to chemical agents, and combinations thereof.

23. The cure in place liquid of claim 19 wherein the base polymer has a molecular weight (Mw) of 1,000 to 100,000.

24. The cure in place liquid of claim 23 wherein the base polymer has a molecular weight (Mw) of 1,000 to 50,000.

25. The cure in place liquid of claim 19 comprising:

40-60 wt % of the bodying component comprising a base polymer having a molecular weight (Mw) of 1,000 to 500,000, selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyvinyl aromatics, polyurethanes, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyethers, and combinations thereof;

5-50 wt % of at least one structural diluent;

10-60 wt % of at least one radical addition diluent;

0-1.0 wt % crosslinker;

0-4.0 wt % of the first curative;

0.01-10 wt % of the second curative; and

0-10.0 wt % stabilizer/process aid.

26. The cure in place liquid of claim 19 wherein the cure in place liquid is at least partially cured.

27. The cure in place liquid of claim 26 wherein the cure in place liquid is at least partially cured by exposure to UV radiation, electron beam, or combinations thereof.

28. The cure in place liquid of claim 26 wherein the cure in place liquid is capable of further cure by exposure to heat, moisture, or combinations thereof.

29. The cure in place liquid of claim 19 wherein the non-acrylic base polymer is a pre-polymerized non-acrylic backbone base polymer.

30. The cure in place liquid of claim 29 wherein the pre-polymerized non-acrylic backbone base polymer does not contain any ethylenic unsaturation along the polymer chain.

31. A construction comprising:

one of more substrates; and

the cure in place liquid of claim 19 disposed on the one or more substrates.

32. A cure in place liquid comprising:

5-70 wt % of a bodying component comprising a non-acrylic base polymer having a molecular weight (Mw) of 1,000 to 500,000, selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyvinyl aromatics, polyurethanes, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyethers, and combinations thereof;

5-80 wt % of at least one structural diluent;

5-70 wt % of at least one radical addition diluent;

0-5.0 wt % of a first curative;

0-10 wt % of a second curative;

0-10 wt % photosensitizer; and

0-10 wt % stabilizer/process aid,

wherein the bodying component and the radical addition diluent are selected to polymerize to a pressure sensitive adhesive in the presence of a first stimulus, and

wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive and the structural diluent are selected to crosslink in the presence of a second stimulus.
