Abstract

Front and rear independent suspension mechanisms accommodating an increased range of motion to better absorb shock originating at the wheels of a riding mower to insulate the operator and reduce stress on the mower chassis and other mechanical components. The front suspension can include a front axle with pivot pockets allowing 360 degree rotation of pivots engaged within the pockets, thereby providing a greater range of absorption of shock entering the front axle at varying angles. The rear suspension can include a vertically pivoting transmission platform, providing for controlled vertical motion in the transmission while the transmission is powered by an engine by way of a belt assembly.

Claims (38)

1. A suspension and drive assembly capable of being coupled to a chassis of a mower, the suspension and drive assembly comprising:

an engine supported by the chassis;

a first support pivotable relative to the chassis about a first end;

a second support pivotable relative to the chassis about a second end;

a transmission coupled to and supported by the first support and the second support, the transmission configured and arranged to be driven by a belt coupled to the engine;

at least one wheel configured to be driven by the transmission; and

wherein the at least one wheel and the transmission are configured to vertically oscillate relative to the chassis and the engine.

2. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 1 , wherein the transmission is coupled to a support bracket including a shock absorber coupled to the chassis.

3. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the transmission is positioned between two shock absorbers.

4. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 1 , where the transmission includes an input pulley coupled to the belt.

5. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 4 , wherein the engine includes an engine pulley coupled to the belt, wherein the input pulley is configured and arranged to be driven by the belt coupled to the engine pulley.

6. A suspension and drive assembly capable of being coupled to a chassis of a mower, the suspension and drive assembly comprising:

a first support including a pivot, the pivot comprising a bushing to allow a pivotable motion relative to the chassis;

a transmission coupled to the pivot and configured and arranged to be driven by a belt coupled to an engine at least, the transmission coupled to a support bracket including a shock absorber;

at least one wheel configured to be driven by the transmission;

wherein the chassis supports the engine; and

wherein the at least one wheel and the transmission re configured to vertically oscillate relative to the chassis and the engine.

7. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 6 , wherein at least a portion of the transmission is positioned between two shock absorbers.

8. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 6 , where the transmission includes an input pulley coupled to the belt.

9. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 8 , wherein the engine includes an engine pulley coupled to the belt, wherein the input pulley is configured and arranged to be driven by the belt coupled to the engine pulley.

10. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 6 , wherein the transmission is positioned between a drive pulley of the engine and the pivot.

11. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 6 , wherein the pivot comprises a second bushing coupled to a second support first end.

12. A suspension and drive assembly capable of being coupled to a chassis of a mower, the suspension and drive assembly comprising:

at least one rear wheel;

a first support pivotable relative to the chassis;

a second support pivotable relative to the chassis;

an engine supported by the chassis;

a transmission including a transmission input pulley and at least one drive shaft coupled to the at least one rear wheel, the transmission supported by the first support and the second support;

a drive belt coupled to the input pulley; and

wherein the at least one rear wheel and the transmission are configured to vertically oscillates relative to the chassis and the engine.

13. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 12 , wherein the engine is a lawnmower engine, and wherein the drive belt is coupled to and driven by the lawnmower engine.

14. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 13 , wherein the transmission is coupled to at least one shock absorber.

15. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 14 , wherein the at least one shock absorber includes one or more springs.

16. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 13 , wherein when the at least one rear wheel vertically oscillates relative to the chassis, the first support, the second support, the transmission, and the drive belt are configured to vertically oscillate relative to the chassis.

17. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 16 , further comprising: a tensioner assembly, the tensioner assembly configured to keep tension in the drive belt constant.

18. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 13 , further comprising a third support coupled to the first support and the second support.

19. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 18 , wherein when the at least one rear wheel vertically oscillates relative to the chassis, the first support, the second support, the transmission, and the third support are configured to vertically oscillate relative to the chassis.

20. The suspension and drive assembly of claim 13 , further comprising a shield configured to protective the components of the suspension and drive assembly from damage.
