Abstract

A navigation assistance system is provided. At least one RF backscatter transmitter, hosted on a device, is configured to emit a RF signal on a frequency. A set of passive RF backscatter tags, each associated with a respective one of a plurality of navigation markers in a given venue, is configured to reflect the RF signal and frequency shift the RF signal to a different frequency. At least one RF backscatter receiver is configured to read the navigation markers on the different frequency by detecting a distributed ambient backscatter signal generated by a reflection and frequency shifting of the RF signal by the passive RF backscatter tag. At least one of the device hosting the at least one RF backscatter transmitter and the other device hosting the at least one RF backscatter receiver is configured to maintain an inventory of locations of the navigation markers in the given venue.

at least one RF backscatter transmitter, hosted on a device, and configured to emit a Radio Frequency (RF) signal on a frequency;

a set of passive RF backscatter tags, each associated with a respective one of a plurality of navigation markers in a given venue and configured to reflect the RF signal and frequency shift the RF signal to a different frequency; and

at least one RF backscatter receiver configured to read the plurality of navigation markers on the different frequency by detecting a distributed ambient backscatter signal generated by a reflection and frequency shifting of the RF signal by the passive RF backscatter tag,

wherein at least one device selected from the group consisting of the device hosting the at least one RF backscatter transmitter and another device hosting the at least one RF backscatter receiver is configured to maintain an inventory of locations of the plurality of navigation markers in the given venue, and

wherein the at least one RF backscatter transmitter and the at least one RF backscatter receiver coordinate usage of multiple channels for backscattering, with at least one of the multiple channels configured for transmission and at least one remaining channel from among the multiple channels configured for reception, and wherein the passive RF backscatter tag comprises a passive non-linear device to generate a mixed frequency detected as the distributed ambient backscatter signal on the at least one of the remaining channels.

2. The navigation assistance system of claim 1 , wherein the backscatter tag is configured to frequency shift and backscatter the RF signal from the at least one RF backscatter transmitter onto a different orthogonal channel for reception by the receiver.

3. The navigation assistance system of claim 1 , wherein a transmission from the at least one RF backscatter transmitter comprises a signal required for shifting the frequency of the distributed ambient backscatter signal by the passive tag.

4. The navigation assistance system of claim 1 , wherein the passive backscatter tag is configured to backscatter the RF signal simultaneously on a first band used by the at least one RF backscatter transmitter and a second band that is orthogonal to the first band and used by the at least one RF backscatter receiver.

5. The navigation assistance system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one RF backscatter transmitter and the at least one RF backscatter receiver are hosted in a same mobile or stationary device in a mono-static configuration.

6. The navigation assistance system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one RF backscatter transmitter and the at least one RF backscatter receiver are hosted on two separate devices in a bi-static configuration.

7. The navigation assistance system of claim 1 , wherein the passive RF backscatter tags store information relevant to the plurality of navigation markers, and modulates the RF signal to convey the information to the at least one RF backscatter receiver.

8. The navigation assistance system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one RF backscatter transmitter and the at least one RF backscatter receiver are embodied in existing re-purposed devices having a primary purpose other than tagging products.

9. The navigation assistance system of claim 1 , wherein the other device hosting the at least one RF backscatter receiver is configured to infer its location based on a location of the at least one proximal tag from where the distributed ambient backscatter signal was received, the at least one proximal tag being comprised in the set of passive RF backscatter tags.

10. The navigation system of claim 1 , wherein at least one device selected from the group consisting of the device hosting the at least one RF backscatter transmitter and the other device hosting the at least one RF backscatter receiver is configured to store and provide navigation information to a user through a software application.

11. The navigation system of claim 10 , wherein the navigation information is provided relative to user-observable ones of the plurality of navigation markers.

12. The navigation system of claim 1 , wherein the device hosting the at least one RF backscatter transmitter is configured to store, and provide to a user, a set of one or more next locations likely to be of interest to a user, based on predicted user trajectories.

13. The navigation system of claim 1 , wherein at least one device selected from the group consisting of the device hosting the at least one RF backscatter transmitter and the other device hosting the at least one RF backscatter receiver is configured to store, and provide to a user, descriptive information about an object proximate to a user.

14. The navigation system of claim 1 , wherein a software application providing location-based services on a user device is deployed by a venue operator, the software application also providing user occupancy and trajectory information relative to the venue to a venue operator in real-time.

15. The navigation system of claim 14 , wherein targeted real advertisement and marketing are performed and interactive and assistance services are provided by a venue operator based on the real-time user location information.

16. The navigation system of claim 1 , wherein the user's interest in venue products as indicated through a software application, is used to provide navigation assistance to the user in real-time within the venue.

17. The navigation system of claim 1 , wherein various ones of the passive RF backscatter tags attached to venue objects and products serve as location markers.

18. The navigation system of claim 1 , wherein a software application reveals to a user its location information in real-time within a context of a complete venue map along with other relevant product and facility information.

19. A method for a navigation assistance, comprising:

emitting, by at least one RF backscatter transmitter, a Radio Frequency (RF) signal on a frequency;

reflecting and frequency shifting, by a set of passive RF backscatter tags, each associated with a respective one of a plurality of navigation markers, the RF signal to a different frequency; and
