Abstract

A dialysis fluid system includes a dialysis fluid inlet; a dialysis fluid outlet; a pump positioned and arranged to pump dialysis fluid through the dialysis fluid inlet and the dialysis fluid outlet; and an inductive heater located between the dialysis fluid inlet and the dialysis fluid outlet, the inductive heater including a fluid flowpath positioned and arranged to receive non-heated dialysis fluid from the dialysis fluid inlet and to output heated dialysis fluid to the a dialysis fluid outlet, a conductive heater element located within the fluid flowpath so as to be or act as a secondary coil of a transformer, and a primary coil of the transformer located outside of the fluid flowpath and positioned so as to magnetically induce a current into the conductive heater element, causing the conductive heater element and surrounding fluid to heat.

Claims (37)

1. A dialysis fluid system comprising:

a dialysis fluid inlet;

a dialysis fluid outlet;

a pump positioned and arranged to pump dialysis fluid through the dialysis fluid inlet and the dialysis fluid outlet; and

an inductive heater located between the dialysis fluid inlet and the dialysis fluid outlet, the inductive heater including

a fluid flowpath positioned and arranged to receive non-heated dialysis fluid from the dialysis fluid inlet and to output heated dialysis fluid to the dialysis fluid outlet,

a conductive heater element located within the fluid flowpath so as to be or act as a secondary coil of a transformer, and

a primary coil of the transformer located outside of the fluid flowpath and positioned so as to magnetically induce a current into the conductive heater element, causing the conductive heater element and surrounding dialysis fluid to heat.

2. The dialysis fluid system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid flowpath and the conductive heater element are located within a heater housing in fluid communication with the dialysis fluid inlet and the dialysis fluid outlet.

3. The dialysis fluid system of claim 2 , wherein the heater housing is formed integrally with a disposable cassette of the system or is separate from and in fluid communication with the disposable cassette.

4. The dialysis fluid system of claim 3 , wherein the disposable cassette is operable with a dialysis machine, the dialysis machine providing the primary coil and an actuation portion of the pump.

5. The dialysis fluid system of claim 4 , wherein the primary coil is positioned and arranged to center or steady the disposable cassette relative to the dialysis machine.

6. The dialysis fluid system of claim 1 , which includes at least one temperature sensor located to monitor the temperature of dialysis fluid flowing through the inductive heater.

7. The dialysis fluid system of claim 1 , wherein the inductive heater is configured so as to be capable of heating the non-heated dialysis fluid from five degrees Celsius to thirty-seven degrees Celsius for the heated dialysis fluid at a flow rate of 150 milliliters per minute.

8. The dialysis fluid system of claim 1 , wherein the conductive heater element forms a cylinder that forces the fluid flowpath to extend along inside and outside surfaces of the cylinder.

9. The dialysis fluid system of claim 8 , which includes a heater housing within which the conductive heater element is located, the heater housing configured to further force the fluid flowpath to extend along the inside and outside surfaces of the cylinder.

10. A dialysis fluid system comprising:

a dialysis fluid machine including a pump actuator;

a disposable cassette including a pumping portion operable with the pump actuator to pump dialysis fluid; and

an inductive heater including

(i) a fluid flowpath positioned and arranged to receive non-heated dialysis fluid and to output heated dialysis fluid,

(ii) a conductive heater element located within the fluid flowpath so as to be or act as a secondary coil of a transformer, and

(iii) a primary coil of the transformer located outside of the fluid flowpath and positioned within the dialysis fluid machine so as to magnetically induce a current into the conductive heater element, causing the conductive heater element and surrounding dialysis fluid to heat,

wherein the primary coil is positioned and arranged to center or steady the disposable cassette relative to the dialysis machine.

11. The dialysis fluid system of claim 10 , wherein the pumping portion of the disposable cassette is located upstream of the fluid flowpath.
