Abstract

An audio/video (A/V) recording and communication doorbell comprises a camera, a front button, and a motion sensor. The camera and the motion sensor are configured to work in tandem to detect motion in a field of view of the A/V recording and communication doorbell, such that a first one of the camera and the motion sensor detects motion and the other one of the camera and the motion sensor independently verifies the motion detection before an alert is sent to a user's client device. In this manner, user alerts from false alarm motion detections are reduced.

Claims (36)

1. An audio/video recording and communication device (A/V device), comprising:

a camera;

a motion sensor, wherein the motion sensor and the camera are configured to work in tandem to detect motion within a field of view of the A/V device;

a communication module;

a processor operatively connected to the camera, the motion sensor, and the communication module; and

a memory storing a program comprising instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the A/V device to:

detect, using the camera, possible motion within the field of view of the A/V device;

independently verify the possible motion detected by the camera using the motion sensor to indicate verified motion; and

send an alert, using the communication module, to a client device after indication of the verified motion.

The A/V device of claim 1 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to detect, using the camera, the possible motion within the field of view of the A/V device by capturing, using the camera, video and comparing successive video frames of the video to detect at least one change in the successive video frames.

The A/V device of claim 1 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to independently verify the possible motion by the camera using the motion sensor by detecting, using the motion sensor, the possible motion within the field of view of the A/V device.

The A/V device of claim 3 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to detect, using the camera, the possible motion within the field of view of the A/V device at a first time, and independently verify the possible motion by the camera using the motion sensor at a second time, wherein the second time is later than the first time.

5. The A/V device of claim 1 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to capture video using the camera.

6. The A/V device of claim 5 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to transmit, using the communication module, the video to a server.

7. The A/V device of claim 1 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to send the alert to the client device via a server.

8. The A/V device of claim 1 , wherein the motion sensor comprises at least one passive infrared (PIR) sensor.

The A/V device of claim 1 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to detect a level of ambient light and compare the detected level of ambient light to a threshold value to determine whether the detected level of ambient light is high or low.

10. The A/V device of claim 9 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to, when the detected level of ambient light is high, forgo independently verifying the possible motion by the camera using the motion sensor.

11. An audio/video recording and communication device (A/V device), comprising:

a motion sensor;

a camera, wherein the camera and the motion sensor are configured to work in tandem to detect motion in a field of view of the A/V device;

a communication module;

a processor operatively connected to the motion sensor, the camera, and the communication module; and

a memory storing a program comprising instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the A/V device to:

detect, using the motion sensor, possible motion within the field of view of the A/V device;

independently verify the possible motion detected by the motion sensor using the camera to indicate verified motion; and

send an alert, using the communication module, to a client device after indication of the verified motion.

The A/V device of claim 11 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to independently verify the possible motion by the motion sensor using the camera by capturing, using the camera, video and comparing successive video frames of the video to detect at least one change in the successive video frames.

The A/V device of claim 11 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to detect, using the motion sensor, the possible motion within the field of view of the A/V device at a first time, and independently verify the possible motion by the motion sensor using the camera at a second time, wherein the second time is later than the first time.

14. The A/V device of claim 11 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to capture video using the camera.

15. The A/V device of claim 14 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to transmit, using the communication module, the video to a server.

16. The A/V device of claim 11 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to send the alert to the client device via a server.

17. The A/V device of claim 11 , wherein the motion sensor comprises at least one passive infrared (PIR) sensor.

The A/V device of claim 11 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to detect a level of ambient light and compare the detected level of ambient light to a threshold value to determine whether the detected level of ambient light is high or low.

19. The A/V device of claim 18 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to, when the detected level of ambient light is low, forgo independently verifying the possible motion by the camera using the motion sensor.

20. The A/V device of claim 18 , wherein the program comprises further instructions that, when executed by the processor, further cause the A/V device to, when the detected level of ambient light is low, while the camera is independently verifying the possible motion by the motion sensor, continuously validate, using the motion sensor, motion within the field of view of the A/V device.
