Abstract

A bone implant includes a proximal end, a distal end, a first portion extending between the proximal and distal ends having a maximum and minimum portion height, and a second portion extending between the proximal and distal ends having a maximum and minimum portion height. The second portion is connected to the first portion at the proximal end and the distal end and at least one of the first portion and the second portion is moveable relative to the other of the first portion and the second portion so as to transition the bone implant between a relaxed state wherein the first and second portions are separated by a first distance and a contracted state wherein the first and second portions are separated by a second distance different from the first distance. At least one of the proximal end and the distal end have the minimum portion height.

Claims (13)

1. An arthrodesis implant for joining a first and second bone that form an articulable joint, comprising:

a first portion for insertion into the first bone and having a nonporous and porous structure forming an outer surface thereof and being configured to promote bone ingrowth therein, the nonporous structure extending within and being surrounded by the porous structure so that the nonporous structure forms a core; and

a second portion for insertion into a second bone and having a plurality of arms, a nonporous structure, and a porous structure, the plurality of arms extending away from the first portion and forming a space therebetween, the nonporous structure extending along and forming an interior surface of the plurality of arms, the interior surface defining the space between the arms, the porous structure at least partially surrounding the nonporous structure and forming an outer surface thereof and being configured to promote bone ingrowth therein,

wherein the first and second portions are coupled to each other such that they form a monolithic structure.

2. The arthrodesis implant of claim 1 , wherein the first portion is angled relative to the second portion such that a longitudinal axis of the first portion is oblique relative to an axis of the second portion.

3. The arthrodesis implant of claim 1 , wherein the first portion has a rectangular cross-section.

4. The arthrodesis implant of claim 1 , wherein the first portion has a helical thread extending about a longitudinal axis thereof.

5. The arthrodesis implant of claim 1 , wherein each arm includes a barb extending outwardly therefrom and being comprised of the porous structure.

6. An arthrodesis implant for joining a first and second bone that form an articulable joint, comprising:

a first portion forming a body extending along a longitudinal axis of the implant for insertion into the first bone and having a porous portion being configured to promote bone ingrowth and forming an outer surface thereof and a nonporous portion extending along a length of the first portion and within the porous portion such that the nonporous portion forms a core of the first portion surrounded by the porous portion; and

a second portion forming a first and second opposed legs extending from the body for insertion into a second bone and having a porous portion forming an outer surface of each leg and being configured to promote bone ingrowth and a nonporous portion extending along a length of of the legs and forming an inner surface thereof.

7. The arthrodesis implant of claim 6 , wherein the first portion has a thread extending about an exterior thereof.

8. The arthrodesis implant of claim 7 , wherein the legs extend away from the first portion and are separated from each other by a space interposed therebetween.
