Abstract

A lift assembly for a spa cover is disclosed. The spa cover is for covering an open upper end of a spa. The lift assembly includes a lever arm having a first portion for supporting a spa cover, and a first end for pivotable coupling to a sidewall of a spa for rotation of the lever arm between a closed position in which the spa cover rests on the upper end of the spa, and an open position in which the spa cover is displaced from the upper end of the spa. The lift assembly also includes a resilient spring having a first end coupled to the lever arm, and a second end for coupling to the sidewall of the spa. In the open position of the lever arm, the spring urges the lever arm to rotate toward the closed position. A spa including the lift assembly is also disclosed.

1. A lift assembly for a spa cover, the spa cover for covering an open upper end of a spa, the lift assembly comprising:

a lever arm having a lever arm distal end portion for supporting a spa cover, and a lever arm proximal end having a lever arm rotation axis, the lever arm extending longitudinally from the lever arm proximal end to the lever arm distal end portion, the lever arm being pivotable about the lever arm rotation axis at the lever arm proximal end between a closed position in which the spa cover rests on the upper end of the spa, and an open position in which the spa cover is displaced from the upper end of the spa; and

an extensible lifter having a lifter proximal end and a lifter distal end, the lifter distal end pivotably coupled to the lever arm at a longitudinal position between the lever arm proximal end and the lever arm distal end portion, the lifter proximal end having a lifter rotation axis located below the lever arm rotation axis, the extensible lifter pivoting about the lifter rotation axis as the lever arm rotates between the open and closed positions,

wherein in the closed position the lever arm distal end portion is laterally inboard of the lifter proximal end, and in the open position the lever arm distal end portion is laterally outboard of the lifter proximal end,

wherein the extensible lifter assists with both rotating the lever arm from the open position towards the closed position and rotating the lever arm from the closed position towards the open position, and

wherein in the open position, the lever arm extends at a first angle to vertical measured from the lever arm rotation axis to the lever arm distal end portion, the extensible lifter extends at a second angle to vertical measured from the lifter rotation axis to the lifter distal end, and the second angle is less than the first angle.

2. The lift assembly of claim 1 , wherein in the open position, the lever arm extends at an angle of 20-150 degrees to vertical.

3. The lift assembly of claim 1 , wherein the extensible lifter has a length that increases as the lever arm rotates from the closed position towards the open position.

4. The lift assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a wall mounting bracket, the lever arm proximal end being pivotably coupled to the wall mounting bracket, wherein the lifter rotation axis is located below the wall mounting bracket.

5. The lift assembly of claim 1 , wherein the lifter rotation axis is located laterally inboard of the lever arm rotation axis.

6. The lift assembly of claim 1 , wherein the extensible lifter exerts an extensive force when rotating from the closed position to the open position.

7. A lift assembly for a spa cover, the spa cover for covering an open upper end of a spa, the lift assembly comprising:

a lever arm having a lever arm distal end portion for supporting a spa cover, and a lever arm proximal end having a lever arm rotation axis, the lever arm extending longitudinally from the lever arm proximal end to the lever arm distal end portion, the lever arm being pivotable about the lever arm rotation axis at the lever arm proximal end between a closed position in which the spa cover rests on the upper end of the spa, and an open position in which the spa cover is displaced from the upper end of the spa; and

a linear driver having a driver proximal end and a driver distal end, the driver distal end pivotably coupled to the lever arm between the lever arm proximal end and the lever arm distal end portion, the driver proximal end located below the lever arm rotation axis, the linear driver pivoting as the lever arm rotates between the open and closed positions,

wherein in the closed position the lever arm distal end portion is laterally inboard of the driver proximal end, and in the open position the lever arm distal end portion is laterally outboard of the driver proximal end, and

wherein the linear driver participates in both rotating the lever arm from the open position towards the closed position and rotating the lever arm from the closed position towards the open position, and

wherein in the open position, the lever arm extends at a first angle to vertical measured from the lever arm rotation axis to the lever arm distal end portion, the linear driver extends at a second angle to vertical measured from the driver proximal end to the driver distal end, and the second angle is less than the first angle.

8. The lift assembly of claim 7 , wherein the driver proximal end has a driver rotation axis located below the lever arm rotation axis.

9. The lift assembly of claim 7 , wherein in the open position, the lever arm extends at an angle of 20-150 degrees to vertical.

10. The lift assembly of claim 7 , wherein the linear driver exerts an extensive force when rotating from the closed position to the open position.

11. The lift assembly of claim 8 , further comprising a wall mounting bracket, the lever arm proximal end being pivotably coupled to the wall mounting bracket, wherein the driver rotation axis is located below the wall mounting bracket.

12. The lift assembly of claim 8 , wherein the driver rotation axis is located laterally inboard of the lever arm rotation axis.

13. A lift assembly for a spa cover, the spa cover for covering an open upper end of a spa, the lift assembly comprising:

a lever arm having a lever arm distal end portion for supporting a spa cover, and a lever arm proximal end having a lever arm rotation axis, the lever arm extending longitudinally from the lever arm proximal end to the lever arm distal end portion, the lever arm being pivotable about the lever arm rotation axis at the lever arm proximal end between a closed position in which the spa cover rests on the upper end of the spa, and an open position in which the spa cover is displaced from the upper end of the spa; and

lifting means having a lifting means proximal end and a lifting means distal end, the lifting means distal end pivotably coupled to the lever arm at a longitudinal position between the lever arm proximal end and the lever arm distal end portion,

wherein in the open position, the lever arm extends at a first angle to vertical, measured from the lever arm rotation axis to the lever arm distal end portion, of 20-150 degrees,
