Abstract

A data file system includes one or more files about a patient wearing a wearable cardiac defibrillator (WCD) system that has been assigned to them. The one or more files contain at least one patient identifier of the patient, compliance data about a history of the patient's wearing the WCD system, and possibly other data. The data file system can be accessed through a communication network when the patient uses a communication device. When so accessed, some of the contents can be viewed on a screen of the device, for example in the form of a website. In embodiments, the health care provider and friends and family can view such data and even enter inputs, which may create a situation that motivates the patient to comply better.

Claims (126)

1. A wearable cardiac defibrillator (WCD) system for monitoring compliance of a patient wearing the WCD system, the WCD system comprising:

a non-transitory storage medium coupled with a processor, the storage medium storing one or more programs;

a support structure configured to be worn by the patient;

an external defibrillator coupled to the support structure; and

a motion sensor coupled to the support structure and configured to generate motion event data of the patient, in which when the one or more programs are executed by the processor, the processor causes the WCD system to perform operations comprising:

monitoring the motion event data of the patient while the patient wears the support structure;

setting an inert threshold for non-use based on the motion event data;

determining whether a compliance statistic about the motion event data reached a motion compliance threshold about the patient wearing the support structure for a period of time;

when the motion compliance threshold is not reached, causing a compliance alert that is human-perceptible to be generated;

receiving a snooze input at the request of the patient;

restarting the motion compliance threshold based on the snooze input;

turning off the compliance alert for a period of time; and

restarting the compliance alert unless the renewed motion compliance threshold is reached.

2. The WCD system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

computing the compliance statistic from the motion event data.

3. The WCD system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a timer configured to generate a time signal, and

in which the compliance statistic is computed using the time signal and the motion event data.

4. The WCD system of claim 1 , further comprising:

an output device, and

wherein the operations further comprise:

causing the compliance alert to be communicated via the output device.

5. The WCD system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving an adjustment input; and

adjusting the compliance motion threshold responsive to the received adjustment input.

6. The WCD system of claim 1 , in which

the processor is within the external defibrillator, and

wherein the operations further comprise:

defibrillating the patient while the support structure is worn by the patient.

7. The WCD system of claim 6 , further comprising:

a communication module, and

wherein the operations further comprise:

causing the motion event data to be communicated by the communication module.

8. The WCD system of claim 6 , further comprising:

a communication module, and

wherein the operations further comprise:

computing the compliance statistic from the motion event data; and

causing the compliance statistic to be communicated by the communication module.

9. The WCD system of claim 8 , further comprising:

a timer configured to generate a time signal, and

wherein the compliance statistic is computed using the time signal and the motion event data.

10. The WCD system of claim 6 , further comprising:

a communication module, and

wherein the generated alert is communicated by the communication module.

11. A wearable cardiac defibrillator (WCD) system for monitoring compliance of a patient wearing the WCD system, the WCD system comprising:

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more programs which, when processed by at least one processor of the WCD system, the WCD system including a support structure configured to be worn by a patient, an external defibrillator coupled to the support structure and a motion sensor coupled to the support structure and configured to generate motion event data of the patient, the WCD system performs operations comprising:

defibrillating the patient while the support structure is worn by the patient;

monitoring the motion event data of the patient while the patient wears the support structure;

setting an inert threshold for non-use based on motion event data;

determining whether a compliance statistic about the motion event data exceeded a motion compliance threshold about the patient wearing the support structure for a period of time;

when the motion compliance threshold is not reached, causing a compliance alert that is human-perceptible to be generated;

receiving a snooze input at the request of the patient;

restarting the motion compliance threshold based on the snooze input;

turning off the compliance alert for a period of time; and

restarting the compliance alert unless the renewed motion compliance threshold is reached.

12. The WCD system of claim 11 , further comprising:

a communication module, and

wherein the operations further comprise:

causing the motion event data to be communicated by the communication module.

13. The WCD system of claim 11 , further comprising:

a communication module, and

wherein the operations further comprise:

computing the compliance statistic from the motion event data; and

causing the compliance statistic to be communicated by the communication module.

14. The WCD system of claim 11 , further comprising:

a timer configured to generate a time signal, and

wherein the compliance statistic is computed using the time signal and the motion event data.

15. The WCD system of claim 11 , further comprising:

a communication module, and

wherein the operations further comprise:

causing the compliance alert to be communicated by the communication module.

16. A method for monitoring compliance of a patient wearing a wearable cardiac defibrillator (WCD) system, the WCD system including a support structure configured to be worn by the patient, an external defibrillator coupled to the support structure and a motion sensor coupled to the support structure and configured to generate motion event data, the method comprising:

defibrillating the patient while the support structure is worn by the patient;

monitoring the motion event data of the patient while the patient wears the support structure;

setting an inert threshold for non-use based on motion event data;

determining whether a compliance statistic about the motion event data crossed a motion compliance threshold about the patient not wearing the support structure for a period of time;

when the motion compliance threshold is not reached, causing a compliance alert that is human-perceptible to be generated;

receiving a snooze input at the request of the patient;

restarting the motion compliance threshold based on the snooze input;

turning off the compliance alert for a period of time; and

restarting the compliance alert unless the renewed motion compliance threshold is reached.

17. The method of claim 16 , in which

the WCD system further includes a communication module, and

the method further comprises:

causing the motion event data to be communicated by the communication module.

18. The method of claim 16 , in which

the WCD system further includes a communication module, and

the method further comprises:

computing the compliance statistic from the motion event data; and

causing the compliance statistic to be communicated by the communication module.

19. The method of claim 18 , in which

the WCD system further includes a timer configured to generate a time signal, and

the compliance statistic is computed also from the time signal.

20. The method of claim 16 , in which

the WCD system further includes a communication module, and

the method further comprises:

causing the compliance alert to be communicated by the communication module.

21. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

receiving an adjustment input; and

adjusting the motion compliance threshold responsive to the received adjustment input.

22. A method for monitoring compliance of a patient wearing a wearable cardiac defibrillator (WCD) system, the WCD system including a support structure configured to be worn by the patient, an external defibrillator coupled to the support structure and a motion sensor coupled to the support structure and configured to generate motion event data, the method comprising:

defibrillating the patient while the support structure is worn by the patient;

monitoring the motion event data of the patient while the patient wears the support structure;

setting an inert threshold for non-use based on motion event data;

determining whether a compliance statistic about the motion event data is larger than a motion compliance threshold about the patient not wearing the support structure for a period of time;

if not, causing a compliance alert that is human-perceptible to be generated;

receiving a snooze input at the request of the patient;

restarting the motion compliance threshold based on the snooze input;

turning off the compliance alert for a period of time; and

restarting the compliance alert unless the renewed motion compliance threshold is reached.

23. The method of claim 22 , in which

the WCD system further includes a communication module, and

the method further comprises:

causing the motion event data to be communicated by the communication module.

24. The method of claim 22 , in which

the WCD system further includes a communication module, and

the method further comprises:

computing the compliance statistic from the motion event data; and

causing the compliance statistic to be communicated by the communication module.

25. The method of claim 24 , in which

the WCD system further includes a timer configured to generate a time signal, and

the compliance statistic is computed also from the time signal.

26. The method of claim 22 , in which

the WCD system further includes a communication module, and

the method further comprises:

causing the compliance alert to be communicated by the communication module.
