Wound debridement by irrigation with ultrasonically activated microbubbles
A treatment system for debriding a treatment area of a tissue site and applying negative pressure is disclosed. In some embodiments, the treatment system may include an ultrasonic bubble generator fluidly coupled to a negative-pressure source, fluid source, and a dressing. Fluid may be drawn from the fluid source to the ultrasonic bubble generator, whereby micro-bubbles and ultrasonic waves may be generated in the fluid before the fluid is instilled to the dressing.
1. A system for treating a tissue site, comprising:
a fluid source; and
an ultrasonic bubble generator coupled to the fluid source, the ultrasonic bubble generator comprising:
a gas bubble generator configured to inject micro-bubbles in a fluid from the fluid source prior to the fluid entering the tissue site, and
an acoustic transducer configured to transmit ultrasonic waves to the micro-bubbles in the fluid prior to the fluid entering the tissue site.
2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an ultra-violet light source configured to generate and treat the fluid with ultra-violet light.
3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:
a manifold adapted to be placed proximate to the tissue site; and
a drape adapted to be placed over the manifold.
4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the manifold comprises a perforated felted foam.
5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the perforated felted foam comprises perforations in a range of 3-7 millimeters (mm) in diameter.
6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the perforations are approximately 5 millimeters (mm) in diameter.
7. The system of claim 3 , wherein the manifold comprises a hydrophilic polymer.
8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the hydrophilic polymer is a hydrophilic polyurethane polymer.
9. The system of claim 3 , wherein the manifold comprises a hydrophilic polymer formed into a porous structure and having perforations in a range of 5-10 millimeters (mm) in diameter.
10. The system of claim 3 , wherein the manifold comprises a hydrophilic polymer formed into a perforated sheet having protrusions on a first side.
11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the protrusions are spaced apart by a range of 5-10 millimeters (mm).
12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the protrusions are hemispherical or polygonal in shape.
13. The system of claim 3 , further comprising a negative pressure source fluidly coupled to the manifold.
14. A system for treating a tissue site, comprising:
a fluid source configured to provide fluid to the tissue site; and
a negative-pressure source fluidly coupled to the fluid source, the negative-pressure source comprising an ultrasonic bubble generator configured to inject microbubbles into the fluid and deform the microbubbles with ultrasonic waves prior to the fluid entering the tissue site.
15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the ultrasonic bubble generator further comprises a gas bubble generator.
16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the gas bubble generator is configured to inject microbubbles into the fluid.
17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the ultrasonic bubble generator further comprises an ultrasonic transducer.
18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the ultrasonic transducer is configured to transmit ultrasonic waves to deform the microbubbles in the fluid.
19. The system of claim 16 , wherein the ultrasonic waves are transmitted as intermittent pulses.
20. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a manifold adapted to be placed proximate to the tissue site and a drape adapted to be placed over the manifold.
21. The system of claim 14 , wherein the microbubbles each comprise a diameter in a range of about 15 micrometers to about 200 micrometers.
22. The system of claim 20 , wherein the manifold comprises a foam with pores each comprising a diameter in a range of about 3 millimeters to about 7 millimeters.
23. The system of claim 14 , wherein the fluid comprises a saline solution with a surfactant.
24. A system for treating a tissue site, comprising:
a fluid source configured to provide fluid to the tissue site; and
an ultrasonic bubble generator coupled to the fluid source, the ultrasonic bubble generator configured to inject microbubbles into fluid from the fluid source and deform the microbubbles with acoustic energy prior to the fluid entering the tissue site.
25. The system of claim 24 , wherein the ultrasonic bubble generator further comprises a gas bubble generator configured to generate microbubbles.
26. The system of claim 25 , wherein the gas bubble generator is configured to inject microbubbles into the fluid from the fluid source.
27. The system of claim 26 , wherein the ultrasonic bubble generator further comprises an acoustic transducer.
28. The system of claim 27 , wherein the acoustic transducer is configured to transmit acoustic waves to deform the microbubbles in the fluid from the fluid source.
29. The system of claim 28 , wherein the acoustic waves comprise ultrasonic waves.
30. The system of claim 29 , wherein the acoustic waves are transmitted as intermittent pulses.
31. The system of claim 24 , wherein the ultrasonic bubble generator is fluidly coupled to a supply conduit, the supply conduit fluidly coupling the fluid source to the tissue site.
32. The system of claim 24 , wherein the microbubbles each comprise a diameter in a range of about 15 micrometers to about 200 micrometers.
33. The system of claim 24 , further comprising a manifold proximate the tissue site, the manifold covered by a drape.
34. The system of claim 33 , wherein the manifold comprises a foam with pores each comprising a diameter in a range of about 3 millimeters to about 7 millimeters.
35. The system of claim 33 , further comprising a negative-pressure source fluidly coupled to the manifold through the drape.
36. The system of claim 24 , further comprising a light source in fluid connection between the fluid source and the ultrasonic bubble generator.
37. The system of claim 36 , wherein the light source is configured to provide ultraviolet light to the fluid.
38. The system of claim 24 , wherein the fluid comprises a saline solution with a surfactant.
