Abstract

The disclosure recites a system and method of identifying location data for a server device managing communications for a wireless network. The method comprises: obtaining location data for the server device; identifying a location for the server device by analyzing at least the location data; updating data in the server device with the location; identifying a communication transmission range for the location for the server device; and configuring communications generated by the server device to conform to the communication transmission range.

Claims (55)

1. A method of identifying location data for a device in order to initiate communications for a wireless network using a radio technology, comprising:

obtaining a predetermined default operating power level for the radio technology;

initiating communications for the wireless network, using the default operating power level;

retrieving, at the device, location data from at least one of:

an internal global positioning system (GPS) module, or

an analysis of transmissions with a cellular network,

determining, using the location data, a regulatory domain for communication transmissions of the device, including any location-specific permissible/restricted operating transmit power levels;

continuing communications for the wireless network, using the location-specific operating power level instead of the default operating power level; and

re-starting the retrieving of the location data and determination of regulatory domain following an event trigger, wherein the event trigger includes detecting that the device entered a new network transmission area.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device is an access point.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the wireless network is an IEEE 802.11-class network.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device is a master device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the location data represents a location of the device in the wireless network.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining the regulatory domain according to the location data;

retrieving transmission parameters corresponding to the regulatory domain from a memory of the device; and

configuring one or more of (i) a transmission frequency range and (ii) a transmission power according to the transmission parameters.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the analysis of transmissions with the cellular network includes: receiving one of the transmissions from a client device that contains location information of the client device.

8. A device, comprising:

a communications sub-system having a transmitter and a receiver; and

a processor connected with the communications sub-system and configured to:

obtain a predetermined default operating power level;

initiate communications for a wireless network, using the default operating power level;

retrieve location data from at least one of:

an internal global positioning system (GPS) module, or

an analysis of transmissions with a cellular network,

determine, using the location data, a regulatory domain for communication transmissions of the device, including any location-specific permissible/restricted operating transmit power levels;

continue communications for the wireless network, using the location-specific operating power level instead of the default operating power level; and

re-start the retrieval of the location data and determination of regulatory domain following an event trigger, wherein the event trigger includes detecting that the device entered a new network transmission area.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the device is an access point.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the wireless network is an IEEE 802.11-class network.

11. The device of claim 8 , wherein the device is a master device.

12. The device of claim 8 , wherein the location data represents a location of the device in the wireless network.

13. The device of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine the regulatory domain according to the location data;

retrieve transmission parameters corresponding to the regulatory domain from a memory of the device; and

configure the transmitter with one or more of (i) a transmission frequency range and (ii) a transmission power according to the transmission parameters.

14. The device of claim 8 , wherein the processor is configured, in order to analyze the transmissions with the cellular network, to: receive one of the transmissions from a client device that contains location information of the client device.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing a computer program executable by a processor of a device having a communications sub-system, to configure the processor to:

obtain a predetermined default operating power level;

initiate communications for a wireless network, using the default operating power level;

retrieve location data from at least one of:

an internal global positioning system (GPS) module, or

an analysis of transmissions with a cellular network,

determine, using the location data, a regulatory domain for communication transmissions of the device, including any location-specific permissible/restricted operating transmit power levels;

continue communications for the wireless network, using the location-specific operating power level instead of the default operating power level; and

re-start the retrieval of the location data and determination of regulatory domain following an event trigger, wherein the event trigger includes detecting that the device entered a new network transmission area.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the device is an access point.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the wireless network is an IEEE 802.11-class network.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the device is a master device.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the location data represents a location of the device in the wireless network.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein execution of the computer program further configures the processor to:

determine the regulatory domain according to the location data;

retrieve transmission parameters corresponding to the regulatory domain from a memory of the device; and

configure a transmitter of the communications sub-system with one or more of (i) a transmission frequency range and (ii) a transmission power according to the transmission parameters.
