Abstract

A rod guide assembly for a shock absorber includes a sintered metal rod guide and a seal. The sintered metal rod guide has a seat. The seal is disposed in the seat and secured to the sintered metal rod guide with a plurality of stake holds.

Claims (39)

1. A rod guide assembly for a shock absorber, the rod guide assembly comprising:

a sintered metal rod guide having a seat; and

a seal disposed in the seat and secured to the sintered metal rod guide with a plurality of stake holds that are formed in the sintered metal rod guide,

wherein the sintered metal rod guide has a first region that has a first density and a second region that has a second density that is less than the first density, wherein the seat is in the first region and the plurality of stake holds are formed in the second region.

2. The rod guide assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the sintered metal rod guide comprises an anti-leak groove and the seal comprises an anti-leak lip disposed in the anti-leak groove.

3. The rod guide assembly according to claim 2 , wherein the seal comprises a washer, a static seal portion, a dust lip portion, and a dynamic seal portion, wherein the static seal portion, the dust lip portion, and the dynamic seal portion are a unitarily formed body, and wherein the static seal portion is coupled to the washer and includes the anti-leak lip.

4. The rod guide assembly according to claim 3 , wherein the anti-leak groove and the anti-leak lip are disposed axially between the dynamic seal portion and the washer.

5. The rod guide assembly according to claim 3 , wherein the dynamic seal portion comprises a garter spring.

6. The rod guide assembly according to claim 1 , wherein each stake hold of the plurality of stake holds defines a non-circular geometry.

7. The rod guide assembly according to claim 6 , wherein each stake hold of the plurality of stake holds defines a rectangular geometry.

8. The rod guide assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the first density is greater than or equal to 6.7 g/cm 3 and less than or equal to 7.1 g/cm 3 , wherein the second density is greater than or equal to 6.6 g/cm 3 and less than or equal to 7.0 g/cm 3 .

9. The rod guide assembly according to claim 1 , wherein a density gradient within the sintered metal rod guide is less than or equal to 0.2 g/cm 3 .

10. The rod guide assembly according to claim 1 further comprising a tube disposed around the sintered metal rod guide, wherein an outer surface of the sintered metal rod guide defines a recess and a wall of the tube intrudes into the recess.

11. The rod guide assembly according to claim 1 further comprising a piston and a rod coupled to the piston, the rod extending through the sintered metal rod guide and the seal.

12. The rod guide assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the sintered metal rod guide is an iron alloy material.

13. A monotube shock absorber comprising:

a tube at least partially defining a gas reservoir and an oil reservoir;

a floating piston disposed within the tube and separating the gas reservoir from the oil reservoir;

a piston disposed in the oil reservoir;

a rod coupled to the piston and extending through the oil reservoir; and

a rod guide assembly disposed within the tube, the rod guide assembly comprising:

a sintered metal rod guide having a seat and a groove, the seat including a seat surface that is recessed from an end of the sintered metal rod guide, the groove being recessed in the seat surface; and

a seal disposed in the seat and secured to the sintered metal rod guide with a plurality of stake holds, wherein the seal includes a static seal portion and a dynamic seal portion, wherein the static seal portion and the dynamic seal portion are formed of a resilient material, wherein the seal contacts the seat surface and a lower lip of the static seal portion is received in the groove to form a seal therein with the metal rod guide, wherein the rod extends through the seal and seals with the dynamic seal portion, wherein the tube comprises a flange portion that extends over an upper surface of the end of the sintered metal rod guide and engages the static seal portion to seal therewith;

wherein the groove and the lower lip are disposed axially between the dynamic seal portion and the seat surface.

14. The monotube shock absorber according to claim 13 , wherein the seal comprises a washer, and a dust lip portion, wherein the washer is disposed in a washer groove defined by the static seal portion.

15. The monotube shock absorber according to claim 14 , wherein the groove and the lower lip are disposed axially between the dynamic seal portion and the washer.

16. The monotube shock absorber according to claim 13 , wherein each stake hold of the plurality of stake holds defines a rectangular geometry and is defined by the sintered metal rod guide.

17. The monotube shock absorber according to claim 13 , wherein the sintered metal rod guide comprises a crimp groove and the tube comprises a lip intruding into the crimp groove.

18. A monotube shock absorber comprising:

a tube including a flange portion and a wall at least partially defining a gas reservoir and an oil reservoir;

a floating piston disposed within the tube and separating the gas reservoir from the oil reservoir;

a piston disposed in the oil reservoir;

a rod disposed about an axis, the rod being coupled to the piston and extending through the oil reservoir; and

a rod guide assembly disposed within the tube, the rod guide assembly comprising:

a sintered metal rod guide having a seat that faces substantially axially with respect to the axis and is recessed from an end of the sintered metal rod guide; and

a seal disposed in the seat and secured to the sintered metal rod guide with a plurality of discrete stake holds deformed into an end of the sintered metal rod guide such that each stake hold of the plurality of discrete stake holds extends radially inward relative to the axis over a portion of the seal to retain the seal in the seat, the seal including a static seal portion and a dynamic seal portion, the dynamic seal portion contacting the rod, the static seal portion contacting the sintered metal rod guide, and

wherein the flange portion of the tube extends radially inward relative to the axis over an upper surface of the end of the sintered metal rod guide to contact the static seal portion of the seal.

19. The rod guide assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the sintered metal rod guide has a third region that has a higher density than the second region, wherein the second region is located along an inner rim of an end of the sintered metal rod guide and the third region is located along an outer rim of the end of the sintered metal rod guide.

20. The rod guide assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the seal comprises a washer, a static seal portion, and a dynamic seal portion, wherein the stake holds extend radially inward relative to a central axis of the sintered metal rod guide to overlap the washer to secure the seal to the sintered metal rod guide.
