Abstract

Methods related to an inactive state of a user equipment (UE). In one example, when an amount of data in an uplink buffer is less than a threshold, the data is sent to the network while remaining in the inactive state. In another example, when reselecting to a different cell, the UE attempts to reselect to the different cell and remain in the inactive state. When transitioning to a connected state at the reselected cell, the UE sends a resume request including an identification of the first cell. In another example, when a high priority or a background PLMN search is performed in the inactive state, the results are cached and implemented the earlier of when a timer expires or the UE enters an idle state. In another example, a cell reselection criteria is altered in the inactive state to make it less likely that a cell reselection will occur.

Claims (47)

1. A method, comprising:

at a user equipment (“UE”) in an inactive state:

determining an amount of data in an uplink buffer;

comparing the amount to a predetermined threshold;

sending a message comprising the data to a network while remaining in the inactive state based on the amount being less than the predetermined threshold;

initiating a timer;

determining whether an acknowledgement (“ACK”) is received by the UE before an expiration of the timer, the ACK indicating the data has been received by the network;

remaining in the inactive state based on receiving the ACK from the network before the expiration of the timer and based on a pseudo-RACH message being successfully received by the network;

determining whether additional attempts are available to send the message in the inactive state; and

transitioning to a connected state to send the data based on not receiving the ACK from the network before the expiration of the timer and determining no additional attempts are available.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inactive state is a radio resource control (RRC) inactive state.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the message comprises a Medium Access Control (MAC) transport block and wherein the predetermined threshold is based on a payload size of the MAC transport block.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the message further comprises a radio network temporary identifier of the UE.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

based on additional attempts are available, resending the message while remaining in the inactive state and reinitiating the timer.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pseudo-RACH message comprises a MAC transport block comprising a header and a payload, wherein the header comprises an Inactive-Radio Network Temporary Identifier (I-RNTI) and the payload comprises at least a portion of the data from the uplink buffer.

7. An integrated circuit of a user equipment (“UE”) comprising circuitry configured to:

determine, when the UE is in an inactive state, an amount of data in an uplink buffer;

compare the amount to a predetermined threshold;

send a message comprising the data to a network while keeping the UE in the inactive state based on the amount being less than the predetermined threshold;

initiate a timer;

determine whether an acknowledgement (“ACK”) is received by the UE before an expiration of the timer, the ACK indicating the data has been received by the network;

keep the UE in the inactive state based on the UE receiving the ACK from the network before the expiration of the timer and based on a pseudo-RACH message being successfully received by the network;

determine whether additional attempts are available to send the message in the inactive state; and

transition the UE to a connected state to send the data based on the UE not receiving the ACK from the network before the expiration of the timer and determining no additional attempts are available.

8. The integrated circuit of claim 7 , wherein the inactive state is a radio resource control (RRC) inactive state.

9. The integrated circuit of claim 7 , wherein the message comprises a Medium Access Control (MAC) transport block and wherein the predetermined threshold is based on a payload size of the MAC transport block.

10. The integrated circuit of claim 9 , wherein the message further comprises a radio network temporary identifier of the UE.

11. The integrated circuit of claim 7 further configured to:

based on additional attempts are available, resend the message while keeping the UE in the inactive state and reinitiating the timer.

12. A user equipment (“UE”), comprising:

a transceiver configured to communicate with a network; and

a processor communicatively coupled to the transceiver and configured to perform operations comprising:

determining, when the UE is in an inactive state, an amount of data in an uplink buffer;

comparing the amount to a predetermined threshold;

sending a message comprising the data to the network while keeping the UE in the inactive state based on the amount being less than the predetermined threshold;

initiating a timer;

determining whether an acknowledgement (“ACK”) is received by the UE before an expiration of the timer, the ACK indicating the data has been received by the network;

keeping the UE in the inactive state based on the UE receiving the ACK from the network before the expiration of the timer and based on a pseudo-RACH message being successfully received by the network;

determining whether additional attempts are available to send the message in the inactive state; and

transitioning the UE to a connected state to send the data based on the UE not receiving the ACK from the network before the expiration of the timer and determining no additional attempts are available.

13. The UE of claim 12 , wherein the inactive state is a radio resource control (RRC) inactive state.

14. The UE of claim 12 , wherein the message comprises a Medium Access Control (MAC) transport block and wherein the predetermined threshold is based on a payload size of the MAC transport block.

15. The UE of claim 14 , wherein the message further comprises a radio network temporary identifier of the UE.

16. The UE of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise:

based on additional attempts are available, resending the message while keeping the UE in the inactive state and reinitiating the timer.

17. The UE of claim 12 , wherein the pseudo-RACH message comprises a MAC transport block comprising a header and a payload, wherein the header comprises an Inactive-Radio Network Temporary Identifier (I-RNTI) and the payload comprises at least a portion of the data from the uplink buffer.
