Abstract

The subject invention provides microbe-based products, as well as their use to improve oil production and refining efficiency by, for example, remediating the disposable layers in oil tanks and other oil storage units. In preferred embodiments, the microbe-based products comprise biochemical-producing yeast and growth by-products thereof, such as, e.g., biosurfactants. The subject invention can be used to remediate rag layer and/or other dissolved solid layers that form in water-oil emulsions. Furthermore, the subject invention can be used for remediating solid impurities, such as sand, scale, rust and clay, in produced water, flow-back, brine, and/or fracking fluids.

Claims (12)

1. A method of dehydrating recovered heavy crude oil fluids comprising a water-oil emulsion and solid impurities, wherein the method comprises applying a composition comprising a yeast and/or a growth by-product thereof to the recovered heavy crude oil fluids, wherein said recovered heavy crude oil fluids are being stored in an oil storage tank,

mixing the composition and the recovered heavy crude oil fluids in the oil storage tank until the water-oil emulsion demulsifies into a water phase and a hydrocarbon phase, and the solid impurities settle out of the crude oil fluids, and

extracting the water phase and the solid impurities from the oil storage tank,

wherein the yeast is Starmerella bombicola or Wickerhamomyces anomalus and wherein the growth by-product is a biosurfactant.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein mixing is performed using an air pump or an agitator.

3. The method of claim 1 , used to remediate an amount of rag layer present in the recovered crude oil fluids.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the composition is applied to the recovered crude oil fluids in an amount equal to or greater than the amount of rag layer in the recovered crude oil fluids.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biosurfactant is a glycolipid selected from sophorolipids, rhamnolipids, trehalose lipids and mannosylerythritol lipids.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biosurfactant is present in the composition at a concentration of 0.1% by weight to 90% by weight.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying an ionic liquid at a concentration of 1% to 5% by volume to the recovered crude oil fluids.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the ionic liquid is ethyl ammonium nitrate or glycerin/magnesium sulfate heptahydrate.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a bacterial growth inhibitor to the recovered crude oil fluids.
