Abstract

An apparatus for regulating a supply voltage supplied from a voltage source to a load via a supply line is provided. The apparatus includes a control circuit configured to generate a control signal based on a difference between a value of the supply voltage and a nominal value of the supply voltage. Further, the apparatus includes a switch circuit configured to couple a charged capacitive element to the supply line based on the control signal.

a control circuit configured to generate a control signal based on a difference between a value of the supply voltage and a nominal value of the supply voltage; and

a switch circuit configured to couple a charged capacitive element to the supply line based on the control signal,

wherein the charged capacitive element is configured to store charge from the supply line while it is connected to the supply line at a first time instant, the value of the supply voltage being higher than the nominal value of the supply voltage at the first time instant, and wherein the charged capacitive element is configured to release charge stored at the first time instant to the supply line while it is connected to the supply line at a succeeding second time instant, the value of the supply voltage being lower than the nominal value of the supply voltage at the second time instant.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to measure the value of the supply voltage at the supply line.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to calculate the value of the supply voltage based on a current consumption profile of the load.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the control circuit is configured to further generate the control signal based on an instantaneous value of the supply voltage measured at the supply line.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the charged capacitive element is charged to a voltage different than the nominal value of the supply voltage.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to generate the control signal to comprise information for controlling the switch circuit to couple the charged capacitive element to the supply line, if the value of the supply voltage is different from the nominal value of the supply voltage.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the charged capacitive element is charged to a voltage higher than the nominal value of the supply voltage, if the value of the supply voltage is lower than the nominal value of the supply voltage.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the charged capacitive element is charged to a voltage lower than the nominal value of the supply voltage, if the value of the supply voltage is higher than the nominal value of the supply voltage.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the capacitive element comprises a plurality of capacitors.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein a first one of the plurality of capacitors comprises a first capacitance, and wherein a second one of the plurality of capacitors comprises a second capacitance.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the switch circuit is configured to couple a number of the plurality of capacitors to the supply line based on the control signal.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the switch circuit is configured to couple the number of the plurality of capacitors either in parallel or in series based on the control signal.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the switch circuit and the capacitive element are part of a digital-to-analog converter.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the control signal is a digital signal.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the voltage source is a DC-to-DC converter.

16. A transceiver comprising an apparatus for regulating a supply voltage according to claim 1 .

17. The transceiver of claim 16 , wherein the load is one of an analog-to-digital converter, a digital-to-analog converter, a mixer, and a power amplifier.

18. A method for regulating a supply voltage supplied from a voltage source to a load via a supply line, the method comprising:

generating a control signal based on a difference between a value of the supply voltage and a nominal value of the supply voltage; and

coupling, using a switch circuit, a charged capacitive element to the supply line based on the control signal,

wherein the charged capacitive element stores charge from the supply line while it is connected to the supply line at a first time instant, the value of the supply voltage being higher than the nominal value of the supply voltage at the first time instant, and wherein the charged capacitive element releases charge stored at the first time instant to the supply line while it is connected to the supply line at a succeeding second time instant, the value of the supply voltage being lower than the nominal value of the supply voltage at the second time instant.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

measuring the value of the supply voltage at the supply line.

20. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

calculating the value of the supply voltage based on a current consumption profile of the load.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein generating the control signal is further based on an instantaneous value of the supply voltage measured at the supply line.

22. The method of claim 18 , wherein the charged capacitive element is charged to a voltage different than the nominal value of the supply voltage.
