Abstract

To predict a first metric for a station in a wireless network, at least one hardware processor in a prediction device or at least one hardware processor in a first access point associated with the station, determines that a recent measurement of a second metric correlated with the first metric has changed compared to a previous measurement of the second metric, the second metric for the station and measure by the first access point; and in case the second metric has changed, prediction of the first metric for the station is triggered. The first metric can be a signal strength of a signal received by the station from a second point not associated with the station and the second metric a signal strength of a signal received by the first access point from the station.

Claims (26)

1. A method for managing a wireless network implemented by a first access point, the method comprising:

taking a recent measurement of a first metric;

determining, by at least one hardware processor in the first access point associated with a station, that the recent measurement of the first metric for the station has changed compared to a previous measurement of the first metric; and

on a condition that the first metric has changed, triggering, by at least one wireless IO in the first access point, a prediction of a second metric for the station, wherein the triggering the prediction includes polling the station in order to receive a recent measurement of a second metric for the station.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein a prediction device is part of the first access point and performs the determining.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second metric is a signal strength of a signal received by the station from a second access point not associated with the station and the first metric is a signal strength of a signal received by the first access point from the station associated with the first access point.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the signal strength is RSSI.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising triggering the prediction on a condition that it is determined that an age of the previous measurement of the second metric is greater than a threshold.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising triggering the prediction on a condition that an age of the previous measurement of the first metric is above an age limit.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the age of the previous measurement of the first metric is calculated from a present time and a time when the previous measurement of the first metric was taken.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the triggering the prediction is immediate or deferred.

9. A first access point, the first access point comprising at least one hardware processor with a wireless interface configured to:

take a recent measurement of a first metric related to a station, wherein the station is associated with the first access point;

determine that the recent measurement of a first metric has changed compared to a previous measurement of the first metric; and

on a condition that the first metric has changed, trigger a prediction of a second metric for the station, wherein the triggering the prediction includes polling the station in order to receive a recent measurement of a second metric for the station.

10. The first access point of claim 9 , wherein a prediction device is part of the first access point and performs the determining.

11. The first access point of claim 9 , wherein the second metric is a signal strength of a signal received by the station from a second access point not associated with the station, and the first metric is a signal strength of a signal received by the first access point from the station associated with the first access point.

12. The first access point of claim 9 , wherein the triggering the prediction is further based on determining that an age of the previous measurement of the second metric is greater than a threshold.

13. The first access point of claim 9 , wherein the first access point is further configured to trigger the prediction based on an age of the previous measurement of the first metric is above an age limit.

14. A computer program comprising program code instructions executable by a processor for implementing the steps of a method according to claim 1 .

15. A computer program product which is stored on a non-transitory computer readable medium and comprises program code instructions executable by a processor for implementing the steps of a method according to claim 1 .

16. A method for managing a wireless network implemented by a first access point, the method comprising:

measuring a first metric a second time, wherein the first metric indicates a signal strength between the first access point and a station associated with the first access point, wherein the first metric represents a first signal strength between the station and the first access point;

determining a difference between the first metric at the second time with the first metric at a first time; and

sending an 802.11k beacon request to the station based on the difference meeting a threshold;

receiving a response to the request from the station with a second metric, wherein the second metric represents a second signal strength between the station and a second access point.
