Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a purge system for a vapor compression system including an emission canister having an adsorbent material disposed therein. The purge system also includes a heating system configured to transfer thermal energy to the adsorbent material, where the heating system includes a first heating element and a second heating element disposed within the emission canister and extending along a central axis of the emission canister. The first heating element and the second heating element are configured to distribute the thermal energy transferred to the adsorbent material disposed within the emission canister to release refrigerant from the adsorbent material.

Claims (31)

1. A purge system for a vapor compression system, comprising:

an emission canister comprising an adsorbent material disposed therein;

a baffled divider disposed within the emission canister and comprising a plurality of fins; and

a heating system configured to transfer thermal energy to the adsorbent material, wherein the heating system comprises a first heating element and a second heating element disposed within the emission canister and extending along a central axis of the emission canister, wherein the first heating element and the second heating element each extend through a corresponding fin of the plurality of fins, and wherein the first heating element and the second heating element are configured to distribute the thermal energy transferred to the adsorbent material disposed within the emission canister to release refrigerant from the adsorbent material.

2. The purge system of claim 1 , wherein the first heating element and the second heating element are spaced approximately equidistant from the central axis of the emission canister.

3. The purge system of claim 1 , wherein the first heating element and the second heating element extend along the central axis from a first end portion of the emission canister to a second end portion of the emission canister.

4. The purge system of claim 1 , wherein the heating system is configured to increase a temperature of the adsorbent material to 200 degrees Fahrenheit or more.

5. The purge system of claim 1 , wherein the first heating element and the second heating element extend through a cap of the emission canister.

6. The purge system of claim 1 , wherein the baffled divider extends along the central axis of the emission canister, wherein the plurality of fins includes a pair of channels formed therein, each configured to receive a respective one of the first heating element and the second heating element, and wherein the first heating element and the second heating element are configured to transfer the thermal energy to the baffled divider.

7. The purge system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of fins extends radially outward with respect to the central axis of the emission canister, wherein the adsorbent material is disposed within chambers formed between the plurality of fins and an interior surface of the emission canister, and wherein the adsorbent material is configured to absorb the thermal energy from the baffled divider.

8. The purge system of claim 1 , wherein the baffled divider is constructed of aluminum, copper, or stainless steel.

9. An emission canister for a vapor compression system, comprising:

a baffled divider disposed within and extending along a central axis of the emission canister, wherein the baffled divider comprises a plurality of fins extending radially outward from the central axis toward an interior surface of the emission canister, and wherein at least one fin of the plurality of fins comprises a channel formed integrally within the at least one fin; and

a heating element disposed with the channel, wherein the heating element is configured to supply thermal energy to the baffled divider, and wherein the baffled divider is configured to distribute the thermal energy from the heating element to an adsorbent material disposed within the emission canister.

10. The emission canister of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of fins abuts the interior surface of the emission canister.

11. The emission canister of claim 9 , comprising a radial gap formed between the plurality of fins and the interior surface of the emission canister, wherein a gasket is disposed between the plurality of fins and the interior surface of the emission canister to occupy the radial gap and block fluid flow therethrough.

12. The emission canister of claim 9 , comprising a thermally conductive gel disposed between the heating element and the channel.

13. The emission canister of claim 9 , wherein the heating element is configured to increase a temperature of the adsorbent material to 200 degrees Fahrenheit or more.

14. The emission canister of claim 9 , comprising a cooling system configured to remove the thermal energy from the adsorbent material of the emission canister, wherein the cooling system comprises:

one or more cooling passages defined within one or more conduits extending through an interior of the emission canister, wherein the one or more conduits extend along the central axis of the emission canister; and

a flow generating device fluidly coupled to the one or more cooling passages and configured to direct a cooling fluid through the one or more cooling passages.

15. A purge system for a vapor compression system, comprising:

a heating system configured to transfer thermal energy to an emission canister of the purge system, wherein the heating system includes at least one heating element extending along a central axis of the emission canister; and

a cooling system configured to remove the thermal energy from the emission canister, wherein the cooling system comprises:

one or more cooling passages extending through an interior of the emission canister along the central axis of the emission canister, wherein the one or more cooling passages extend from a first end portion of the emission canister to a second end portion of the emission canister; and

a flow generating device fluidly coupled to the one or more cooling passages, wherein the flow generating device is configured to direct a cooling fluid through the one or more cooling passages, and wherein the cooling fluid is configured to absorb the thermal energy from the emission canister.

16. The purge system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more cooling passages comprise internal fins, external fins, or both, and wherein the internal fins, the external fins, or both, are configured to increase a heat transfer surface area between the cooling fluid and the emission canister.

17. The purge system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more cooling passages are defined by one or more conduits extending through a cap of the emission canister and into the interior of the emission canister, and wherein the one or more conduits are embedded within an adsorbent material disposed within the interior of the emission canister.

18. The purge system of claim 15 , wherein the flow generating device is configured to be inactive during a regeneration cycle of the emission canister.

19. The purge system of claim 15 , comprising one or more additional cooling passages disposed circumferentially about an exterior surface of the emission canister.

20. The purge system of claim 19 , wherein an insulating layer is disposed between the one or more additional cooling passages and the exterior surface of the emission canister.
