Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a purge system for a vapor compression system including an emission canister. The emission canister includes a load cell disposed in an interior of the emission canister, a base supported by the load cell, and an adsorbent material disposed on the base. The adsorbent material is configured to adsorb a refrigerant flowing through the emission canister, and the load cell is configured to monitor a weight of the adsorbent material and the refrigerant within the emission canister.

Claims (19)

1. A purge system for a vapor compression system, comprising:

an emission canister, comprising:

an adsorbent material configured to adsorb a refrigerant flowing through the emission canister; and

a controller configured to receive feedback indicative of a temperature of the adsorbent material, wherein the controller is configured to determine a saturation point of the adsorbent material based on a comparison of the temperature of the adsorbent material with a threshold temperature indicative of saturation of the adsorbent material.

2. The purge system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to receive feedback indicative of a weight of the adsorbent material and the refrigerant, wherein the controller is configured to determine the saturation point of the adsorbent material based on a comparison of the weight of the adsorbent material and the refrigerant with a threshold weight indicative of saturation of the adsorbent material.

3. The purge system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to initiate or terminate a regeneration cycle of the emission canister based on the feedback indicative of the temperature of the adsorbent material.

4. A method, comprising:

directing a flow of non-condensable gases and refrigerant into an emission canister;

adsorbing the refrigerant of the flow of non-condensable gases and refrigerant in an adsorbent material disposed within the emission canister;

monitoring a temperature of the adsorbent material; and

determining a saturation point of the adsorbent material based on the temperature of the adsorbent material, wherein the saturation point is reached when the temperature of the adsorbent material reaches or exceeds a target temperature indicative of saturation of the adsorbent material.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

terminating the flow of non-condensable gases and refrigerant into the emission canister upon reaching the saturation point of the adsorbent material; and

initiating a regeneration cycle of the emission canister subsequent to terminating the flow of non-condensable gases and refrigerant.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

monitoring the temperature of the adsorbent material during the regeneration cycle; and

terminating the regeneration cycle when the temperature of the adsorbent material reaches an additional target temperature indicative of the adsorbent material being unsaturated.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein monitoring the temperature of the adsorbent material comprises collecting a plurality of temperature measurements of the temperature of the adsorbent material, wherein sequential temperature measurements of the plurality of temperature measurements are separated by a predetermined interval.

8. The method of claim 4 , wherein monitoring the temperature of the adsorbent material comprises receiving feedback from a sensor configured to detect a property relating to a thermal energy of the adsorbent material, wherein the sensor comprises a thermocouple or an infrared sensor.
