Abstract

The present invention relates to dentifrice compositions comprising spherical, anhydrous, amorphous, silica gel particles having a pore volume of less than 0.1 ml/g and an orally acceptable carrier. Such compositions can effectively clean, polish and remove stains from the surface of teeth or dentures without a high degree of abrasion thereby reducing scratching and damage to the tooth or denture surface. Such compositions thereby provide superior cleaning, polishing, gentle stain removal and whitening of tooth surfaces or dentures.

Claims (20)

1. A dentifrice composition comprising non-fused spherical, anhydrous, amorphous, silica gel particles obtained by a process that involves precipitation followed by calcination to remove water to produce a dense particulate silica material, and wherein said silica gel particles comprise:

a. a pore volume from 0.03 ml/g to less than 0.1 ml/g;

b. a mean particle size from 1μ to 10μ;

c. a BET surface area of 50 m 2 /g or less;

d. an oil absorption capacity of 20 to 50 ml/100 g; and

e. a water content of less than 0.2 wt. %.

2. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein the silica gel particles comprise a compression strength in the range 1800 MPa to 2000 MPa.

3. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein the silica gel particles are the sole abrasive in the dentifrice.

4. A composition as claimed in claim 1 comprising a supplementary abrasive.

5. A composition as claimed in claim 1 comprising a water soluble condensed phosphate.

6. A composition as claimed in claim 5 wherein the condensed phosphate is a water-soluble alkali metal tripolyphosphate salt.

7. A composition as claimed in claim 1 comprising a desensitizing agent.

8. A composition as claimed in claim 1 comprising a source of fluoride ions.

9. A dentifrice composition according to claim 1 wherein the silica gel particles comprise:

a. a pore volume of 0.05 ml/g;

b. a mean particle size of 4μ;

c. a BET surface area of 40 m 2 /g; and

d. an oil absorption capacity of 30 ml/100 g.

10. A Dentifrice composition according to claim 1 wherein the silica gel particles are present in an amount from 0.1% to 5% by weight of the composition.

11. A dentifrice composition according to claim 1 for use in cleaning, polishing and removing stains from the surface of the teeth or dentures.
