Abstract

A prosthetic aortic valve includes an annular, annulus inflow portion that is designed to reside in or near the patient's native aortic valve annulus, and an annular, aortic outflow portion that is designed to reside in the patient's aorta downstream from at least a portion of the valsalva sinus. The annulus inflow portion and the aortic outflow portion are connected to one another by a plurality of connecting struts that are confined to regions near the commissures of the patient's native aortic valve. The connecting struts are designed to bulge out into the valsalva sinus to help anchor the prosthetic valve in place. The valve is circumferentially collapsible to a relatively small diameter for less-invasive delivery into the patient. The valve circumferentially expands to a larger operational diameter when deployed at the implant site.

Claims (17)

1. A prosthetic heart valve, comprising:

a stent frame having an expanded condition and a collapsed condition, the stent frame extending from a proximal end to a distal end and including an inflow portion at the proximal end and an outflow portion at the distal end, the inflow portion including a plurality of commissure structures spaced from one another in an annular direction around the inflow portion, each of the commissure structures having a free end, the free ends being features of the inflow portion that are closest to the outflow portion, the inflow portion including a plurality of sections cantilevered from a remainder of the stent frame only at points in the outflow portion, each of the sections including one of the commissure structures; and

a plurality of valve leaflets supported by the inflow portion.

2. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the inflow portion is devoid of structure between annularly adjacent ones of the sections so as to define a gap between the annularly adjacent ones of the sections.

The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of connecting struts connecting the inflow portion to the outflow portion, each of the connecting struts being connected to the inflow portion only at points that are farther from the outflow portion than the free ends of the commissure structures.

4. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 3 , wherein each of the commissure structures has an associated pair of the connecting struts, the connecting struts in the pair being disposed on opposite sides of the commissure structure in the annular direction.

5. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 3 , wherein each of the connecting struts is connected at a first end to the inflow portion and at a second end to the outflow portion, and each of the commissure structures is cantilevered from a respective pair of the connecting struts.

6. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the outflow portion is annularly continuous all the way around the valve.

The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of anchor members that are resiliently biased to incline outwardly from the stent frame in the expanded condition, the anchor members being connected to the stent frame only at positions that are not between the inflow portion and the outflow portion.

8. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising an annular cuff that is mounted on the inflow portion of the stent frame.

9. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the valve leaflets are made of a material selected from the group consisting of biological tissue, polymer, thin metal and reinforced polymer.

10. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 1 , wherein

the stent frame includes a plurality of connecting struts, each of the connecting struts having a first end connected to the inflow portion and a second end connected to the outflow portion, and each of the commissure structures has a first portion with a first end and a second portion, the commissure structure being connected to a respective pair of points on a remaining structure of the inflow portion only at the first end, each of the commissure structures including an associated pair of the connecting struts, the connecting struts in the pair being disposed on opposite sides of the commissure structure in the annular direction, and each cantilevered section including a commissure structure and its associated pair of connecting struts.

The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 10 , wherein an edge of the inflow portion that is most remote from the outflow portion includes a recessed edge portion aligned with at least one of the commissure structures, the recessed edge portion being closer to the outflow portion than other portions of the edge of the inflow portion.

12. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the stent frame includes a plurality of apertures.

13. The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 10 , further comprising fabric outside at least a portion of the stent frame.

The prosthetic heart valve as claimed in claim 11 , further comprising a plurality of anchor members that are resiliently biased to incline outwardly from the stent frame in the expanded condition, the anchor members being connected to the stent frame only at positions that are not between the inflow portion and the outflow portion.
