Abstract

A tissue removal device includes an outer tubular member coupled to a housing and a having a tissue resection window, an inner tubular member slidably disposed within the outer tubular member, a tissue trap having a sealed interior in fluid communication with a vacuum chamber, an open proximal end of the inner tubular member being disposed within the tissue trap interior, and an actuator moveably coupled to the housing and operatively connected to a movable piston in the vacuum chamber, such that movement of the actuator relative to the housing generates a vacuum in the tissue trap.

Claims (25)

1. A tissue removal device, comprising:

a housing;

an outer tubular member coupled to the housing and having a distal portion including a tissue resection window;

an inner tubular member slidably disposed within the outer tubular member and defining an inner lumen extending from an open distal end to a proximal end, the proximal end comprising an opening through which fluid can pass;

a vacuum generation chamber disposed in the housing including a movable piston disposed in the vacuum generation chamber;

a tissue trap disposed in or coupled to the housing, the tissue trap defining a sealed interior in fluid communication with the vacuum generation chamber via a one-way valve and in fluid communication with the inner lumen of the inner tubular member via the opening, so that air may be withdrawn from the inner lumen via the tissue trap interior and into the vacuum generation chamber by movement of the piston in a first direction, while air is prevented from entering the tissue trap interior from the vacuum generation chamber due to movement of the piston in a second direction opposite the first direction; and

a manual actuator moveably coupled to the housing and operatively connected to the piston, such that movement of the actuator relative to the housing causes movement of the piston within the vacuum generation chamber, wherein the actuator is selectively operatively coupled to the inner tubular member such that in a first configuration the actuator is not operatively coupled to the inner tubular member, and in a second configuration the actuator mechanically engages the inner tubular member such that movement of the actuator relative to the housing causes the open distal end of the inner tubular member to move distally across the tissue resection window as the actuator is moved relative to the housing.

2. The tissue removal device of claim 1 , wherein manual actuation of the actuator initiates translation of the inner tubular member relative to the outer tubular member.

3. The tissue removal device of claim 1 , wherein the outer tubular member is rotatable relative to the housing for positioning or repositioning the sidewall opening.

4. The tissue removal device of claim 1 , wherein the outer tubular member is conformable.

5. The tissue removal device of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured such that manually actuating the actuator a first time generates vacuum in the vacuum generation chamber, and thereafter manually actuating the actuator a second time initiates translation of the inner tubular member relative to the outer tubular member.

6. The tissue removal device of claim 1 , wherein the one-way valve prevent air from entering the tissue trap interior when the piston moves proximally relative to the vacuum chamber.

7. The tissue removal device of claim 1 further comprising a second one-way valve coupled to the vacuum generation chamber, wherein the second one-way valve allow air to be expelled from the vacuum chamber.

8. The tissue removal device of claim 1 further comprising a seal disposed in the tissue trap, wherein the seal is configured to selectively sealing the opening from the tissue trap.

9. A surgical device for resecting tissue from a uterus, the surgical device comprising:

a housing;

a vacuum chamber disposed in the housing;

a piston disposed in the vacuum chamber;

a manually-operated actuator mechanically coupled to the piston and configured to move the piston and thereby generate vacuum in the vacuum chamber in response to a force applied to the actuator;

an outer tube having a proximal end coupled to the housing and a sidewall opening near a distal end of the outer tube, the outer tube having a lumen in communication with the sidewall opening, a distal portion of the outer tube being configured for transcervical positioning within a uterus so that the sidewall opening may be positioned adjacent to uterine wall tissue targeted for removal; and

an inner tube positioned within the outer tube lumen, the inner tube being translatable relative to the outer tube, the inner tube having a lumen in communication with the vacuum chamber such that a vacuum generated in the vacuum chamber also generates vacuum in the inner tube lumen, the inner tube lumen being in selective fluid communication with the sidewall opening in the outer tube via a distal opening in the inner tube.

10. The surgical device of claim 9 , configured such that manual actuation of the actuator initiates translation of the inner tube relative to the outer tube, wherein the surgical device is configured such that manual actuation of the actuator a first time generates vacuum in the vacuum chamber, and subsequent manual actuation of the actuator a second time initiates translation of the inner tube relative to the outer tube, and wherein the inner tube is translatable relative to the outer tube without moving the piston.

11. The surgical device of claim 9 , wherein the outer tube is rotatable relative to the housing to allow for positioning or repositioning of the sidewall opening relative to the housing.

12. The surgical device of claim 9 , wherein the outer tubular member is conformable.

13. The surgical device of claim 9 , wherein the actuator comprises a trigger operably coupled to the housing.
