Abstract

A server device that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a memory and a processor. The processor can identify first and second players present at first and second physical locations, to identify first and second boundary and topographical information of the first and second physical locations, to map the first and second boundary and topographical information of the first and second physical locations to a virtual gaming space, to capture first and second position and orientation information for the first and second players, to map the first and second position and orientation information to the virtual gaming space, to generate first and second virtual players corresponding to the first and second players, and to transmit to first goggles information representative of the second virtual player for display superimposed onto a transparent viewing apparatus for viewing of the virtual gaming space. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

selectively deploying one or more physical objects in a physical location, including raising or lowering active structures onto playing surfaces of the physical location;

mapping boundary and topographical information of the physical location, including the one or more physical objects, to a virtual gaming space, the virtual gaming space combinable at least in part with images of the physical location;

receiving first orientation information of a first player device associated with a first player at the physical location;

mapping the first orientation information for the first player device to the virtual gaming space resulting in a first updated virtual gaming space;

transmitting, to the first player device, first information representative of the first updated virtual gaming space;

identifying a computer-controlled player, wherein the computer-controlled player comprises a player commanded by a software application at a computer device;

mapping second orientation information for the computer-controlled player to the first updated virtual gaming space resulting in a second updated virtual gaming space;

transmitting, to the first player device, second information representative of the second updated virtual gaming space, wherein the first player device displays the computer-controlled player in the second updated virtual gaming space according to the second orientation information;

identifying a virtual action generated by the first player device while at the physical location;

replacing the virtual action with a substitute action, wherein the replacing is according to an accessory management profile associated with the first player;

determining, according to the substitute action, a virtual effect on the computer-controlled player; and

transmitting, to the first player device, information representative of the virtual effect on the computer-controlled player.

2. The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

capturing third orientation information for a second player device at the physical location;

mapping the third orientation information for the second player device to the second updated virtual gaming space resulting in a third updated virtual gaming space;

transmitting, to the first player device, third information representative of the second player device in the third updated virtual gaming space.

3. The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 2 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving a request for communications between the first player device and the second player device; and

responsive to the request, initiating a communications link between the first player device and the second player device.

4. The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 2 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving messages from the first player device; and

transmitting the messages to the second player device.

5. The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 2 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving messages from the second player device; and

transmitting first messages to the first player device.

6. The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-controlled player comprises a computer-controlled animated object.

7. The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the first orientation information is generated by the first player device via a gyroscope, a compass, an accelerometer, or any combinations thereof.

8. The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the second orientation information is determined relative to the first orientation information of the first player device.

9. The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise transmitting a streaming video to the first player device, the streaming video representative of the virtual effect on the computer-controlled player.

10. The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

generating a plurality of virtual objects; and

transmitting, to the first player device, third information representative of the plurality of virtual objects.

11. The non-transitory, machine-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the first player device comprises a mobile communication device, a tablet, or a computer.

12. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a processing system including a processor that executes a virtual game application, first orientation information for a computing device at a physical location;

transmitting, by the processing system to the computing device, first information representative of a mapping of boundary and topographical information of the physical location and first orientation information of the computing device to a virtual gaming space, the virtual gaming space combined at least in part with images of the physical location, the physical location including one or more physical objects that are selectively deployable by the processing system in the physical location;

transmitting, by the processing system to the computing device, second information representative of a mapping of second orientation information of a computer-generated player to the virtual gaming space, wherein the computer-generated player comprises a player controlled by a software application at a computer device;

identifying, by the processing system, an action generated by the computing device while located at the physical location;

replacing the action with a substitute action according to an accessory management profile;

mapping, by the processing system, the substitute action generated by the computing device to the virtual gaming space to generate a virtual action; and

determining, by the processing system according to the virtual action, a virtual effect on the computer-generated player.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the processing system operates from a server and wherein the method further includes selectively adding or removing physical objects of the one or more physical objects by the processing system in the physical location.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the computing device comprises a mobile communication device, a tablet, or a computer.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first orientation information comprises location data and orientation data generated by the computing device.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the second orientation information is determined relative to the first orientation information of the computing device.

17. The method of claim 12 , further comprising transmitting, by the processing system, a streaming video to the computing device representative of the virtual effect on the computer-generated player.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the action comprises user-generated input generated by the computing device, and wherein the computer-generated player comprises an animation object.

19. A system, comprising:

a processing system including a processor; and
