Abstract

A cooking grate for a grill is provided having substantially hollow rungs in fluid communication with each other and/or with a substantially hollow border to provide improved thermal management and more efficient heat transfer.

Claims (24)

1. A cooking grate for use on a grill, the cooking grate comprising:

a substantially hollow border including a first border portion, a second border portion located opposite the first border portion, and a third border portion located between the first and second border portions, the third border portion connected to and in fluid communication with the first and second border portions; and

a plurality of spaced apart rungs connected to the first and second border portions, each of the rungs including a first end, a second end, a bottom surface, and side surfaces, the first and second ends defining a length of the rung, the bottom surface having a downwardly facing, concave cross-sectional shape defining a substantially hollow channel along at least a portion of the length of the rung, the side surfaces of each rung increasing in width along the length of the rung from the first and second ends of the rung toward a center of the length of the rung.

2. The cooking grate of claim 1 , wherein each of the first, second, and third border portions includes an outside edge, an inside edge, and an upper surface extending between the outside edge and the inside edge, the upper surface sloping downwardly from the outside edge to the inside edge.

3. The cooking grate of claim 1 , wherein the first end of each rung is connected to the first border portion and the second end of each rung is connected to the second border portion such that the substantially hollow channel of each rung is in fluid communication with the substantially hollow border.

4. The cooking grate of claim 1 , further comprising a cross member including a first end, a second end, and a bottom surface, the first and second ends of the cross member defining a length of the cross member, the bottom surface of the cross member having a downwardly facing, concave cross-sectional shape defining a substantially hollow channel along at least a portion of the length of the cross member.

5. The cooking grate of claim 4 , wherein the first end or the second end of the cross member is connected to the third border portion such that the substantially hollow channel of the cross member is in fluid communication with the substantially hollow border.

6. The cooking grate of claim 4 , wherein the cross member is connected to each of the rungs such that the substantially hollow channel of the cross member is in fluid communication with the substantially hollow channel of each of the rungs.

7. The cooking grate of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of feet connected to a bottom surface of the substantially hollow border.

8. The cooking grate of claim 7 , wherein the feet are configured to engage a ledge of a firebox of the grill.

9. The cooking grate of claim 8 , wherein the feet are configured to prevent the at least one of the first, second, and third border portions from contacting the ledge.

10. The cooking grate of claim 8 , wherein the feet are configured to prevent each of the first, second, and third border portions from contacting the ledge.

11. A cooking grate for use on a grill, the cooking grate comprising:

a substantially hollow border including a first border portion, a second border portion located opposite the first border portion, and a third border portion located between the first and second border portions, the third border portion connected to and in fluid communication with the first and second border portions; and

a plurality of spaced apart rungs connected to the first and second border portions, each of the rungs including a first end, a second end, a bottom surface, and tapered side surfaces, the first and second ends defining a length of the rung, the bottom surface having a downwardly facing, concave cross-sectional shape defining a substantially hollow channel along at least a portion of the length of the rung, the tapered side surfaces of each rung increasing in depth along the length of the rung from the first and second ends of the rung toward a center of the length of the rung.

12. The cooking grate of claim 11 , wherein each of the first, second, and third border portions includes an outside edge, an inside edge, and an upper surface extending between the outside edge and the inside edge, the upper surface sloping downwardly from the outside edge to the inside edge.

13. The cooking grate of claim 11 , wherein the first end of each rung is connected to the first border portion and the second end of each rung is connected to the second border portion such that the substantially hollow channel of each rung is in fluid communication with the substantially hollow border.

14. The cooking grate of claim 11 , further comprising a cross member including a first end, a second end, and a bottom surface, the first and second ends of the cross member defining a length of the cross member, the bottom surface of the cross member having a downwardly facing, concave cross-sectional shape defining a substantially hollow channel along at least a portion of the length of the cross member.

15. The cooking grate of claim 14 , wherein the first end or the second end of the cross member is connected to the third border portion such that the substantially hollow channel of the cross member is in fluid communication with the substantially hollow border.

16. The cooking grate of claim 14 , wherein the cross member is connected to each of the rungs such that the substantially hollow channel of the cross member is in fluid communication with the substantially hollow channel of each of the rungs.

17. The cooking grate of claim 11 , further comprising a plurality of feet connected to a bottom surface of the substantially hollow border.

18. The cooking grate of claim 17 , wherein the feet are configured to engage a ledge of a firebox of the grill.

19. The cooking grate of claim 18 , wherein the feet are configured to prevent the at least one of the first, second, and third border portions from contacting the ledge.

20. The cooking grate of claim 18 , wherein the feet are configured to prevent each of the first, second, and third border portions from contacting the ledge.
