Abstract

A vehicle body structure that includes a rear pillar assembly that has an upper end and a lower end. The rear pillar structure at least partially defines a rear corner area of a passenger compartment. The rear pillar assembly further includes a first panel and a second panel. The first panel extends downward from the upper end and the second panel extending from the upper end in a vehicle forward direction at least partially defining a roof rail assembly. The first panel and the second panel overlap one another at the upper end of the rear pillar assembly defining an overlap area. The first and second panels are fixedly attached to one another at the overlap area.

Claims (45)

1. A vehicle body structure, comprising

a rear pillar assembly having an upper end and a lower end, the rear pillar structure at least partially defining a rear corner area of a passenger compartment and a rear corner of the vehicle body structure, the rear pillar assembly including a first panel and a second panel, the first panel extending downward from the upper end and the second panel extending from the upper end in a vehicle forward direction at least partially defining a roof rail assembly, the first panel having a first upright edge and a second upright edge, a portion of the first upright edge at least partially defining a rear window opening and the second upright edge at least partially defining a side door opening; and

an attachment panel fixed to the first panel proximate a lower end of the rear window opening such that an upper edge of the attachment panel and a portion of the first upright edge further at least partially defining the rear window opening, the attachment panel extending in an inboard vehicle direction perpendicular to the vehicle forward direction, and

the first panel and the second panel overlapping one another at the upper end of the rear pillar assembly defining an overlap area, the first and second panels being fixedly attached to one another at the overlap area with the second panel extending downward adjacent to the rear window opening.

2. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , further comprising

an outboard body panel assembly that includes an outer panel portion that further defines the rear pillar assembly and the roof rail assembly.

3. The vehicle body structure according to claim 2 , further comprising

a reinforcement panel that is welded to an inboard surface of the outer panel portion along at least the upper end of the rear pillar assembly.

4. The vehicle body structure according to claim 3 , wherein

the reinforcement panel includes at least one seatbelt support portion.

5. The vehicle body structure according to claim 3 , wherein

the first panel and the second panel overlay at least a portion of an inboard surface of the reinforcement panel.

6. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the first panel has a first thickness and the second panel having a second thickness, the second thickness being greater than the first thickness.

7. The vehicle body structure according to claim 6 , wherein

the second thickness is at least 10% greater than the first thickness.

8. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the overlap area defined by the overlapping of the first panel and the second panel includes at least 35% of an outboard facing surface of the second panel overlapping a portion of an inboard facing surface of the first panel.

9. The vehicle body structure according to claim 8 , wherein

the overlap area defined by the overlapping of the first panel and the second panel includes at least 10% of the inboard facing surface of the first panel overlapping the outboard facing surface of the second panel.

10. The vehicle body structure according to claim 9 , wherein

the first panel extends downward from the upper end of the rear pillar assembly a distance that is at least 80% of the overall height of the rear pillar assembly.

11. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein

the second panel includes a rear roof rail attachment portion that extends in a vehicle inboard direction from the second panel.

12. A vehicle body structure, comprising

an outboard body panel assembly defining a side door opening and extending in a vehicle forward direction;

an inner body panel assembly fixedly attached to the outboard body panel assembly, a rear corner area of the outboard body panel assembly and the inner body panel assembly defining a rear pillar assembly that further defines a rear corner of a passenger compartment and a rear corner of the vehicle body structure;

the rear pillar assembly having an upper end and a lower end, the rear pillar assembly including a first panel and a second panel, the first panel extending downward from the upper end and the second panel extending from the upper end in the vehicle forward direction at least partially defining a roof rail assembly, the first panel and the second panel overlapping one another at the upper end of the rear pillar assembly defining an overlap area, the first and second panels being fixedly attached to one another at the overlap area; and

a reinforcement panel overlaying at least part of the overlap area defined by the first panel and the second panel, the reinforcement panel further having a curved portion that extends in a vehicle forward direction from the proximate the overlap portion, the reinforcement panel further curving downward along the second panel, the curved portion being welded to the portion of the first panel and the second panel.

13. The vehicle body structure according to claim 12 , further comprising

a reinforcement panel that is welded to an inboard surface of the outboard body panel assembly along at least the upper end of the rear pillar assembly with the first panel and the second panel overlaying the reinforcement panel.

14. The vehicle body structure according to claim 13 , wherein

the reinforcement panel includes at least one seatbelt support portion.

15. The vehicle body structure according to claim 12 , wherein

the first panel has a first thickness and the second panel having a second thickness, the second thickness being greater than the first thickness.

16. The vehicle body structure according to claim 15 , wherein

the second thickness is at least 10% greater than the first thickness.

17. The vehicle body structure according to claim 12 , wherein

the overlap area defined by the overlapping of the first panel and the second panel includes at least 35% of an outboard facing surface of the second panel overlapping a portion of an inboard facing surface of the first panel.

18. The vehicle body structure according to claim 17 , wherein

the overlap area defined by the overlapping of the first panel and the second panel includes at least 10% of the inboard facing surface of the first panel overlapping the outboard facing surface of the second panel.

19. The vehicle body structure according to claim 18 , wherein
