Abstract

The present disclosure is directed to apparatus, methods, and non-transitory storage medium for controlling the maximum speed of a vehicle as that vehicle travels along a route. Apparatus and methods consistent with the present disclosure may receive location information from an electronic device that is located at a vehicle and may provide information to the electronic device at that controls the maximum speed of the vehicle as speed limits change along the route.

Claims (43)

1. A method for controlling vehicle speed, the method comprising:

receiving information identifying a location within an area, the information received from a positioning system of a vehicle;

identifying a speed limiting factor that affects travel of the vehicle;

identifying a profile distance that corresponds to a distance to be covered while slowing from a current speed of the vehicle to a target speed based on the speed limiting factor;

identifying, based on the speed limiting factor and the profile distance, the target speed to transmit to a vehicle controller, the target speed identified at least in part by reducing a maximum speed associated with the location and the profile distance according to the speed limiting factor; and

transmitting the target speed to the vehicle controller, the target speed transmitted to the vehicle controller instructing the vehicle controller to automatically limit a speed that the vehicle can travel within the area to the target speed by automatically actuating a brake to automatically slow the vehicle from the current speed to the target speed within the profile distance of the location.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with an anomaly associated with the vehicle.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with a weight of the vehicle.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with an experience level of a driver of the vehicle.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle is a first type of vehicle, and wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with the first type of vehicle.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

storing information indicating that a second speed limiting factor is associated with a second type of vehicle, wherein the vehicle is a first type of vehicle and the speed limiting factor is associated with the first type of vehicle, wherein to identify the target speed, the speed limiting factor reduces the maximum speed by a greater amount than a second speed limiting factor associated with the second type of vehicle;

identifying a second target speed to transmit to a second vehicle controller of a second vehicle by reducing the maximum speed associated with the location according to the second speed limiting factor; and

transmitting the second target speed to the second vehicle controller, the target speed transmitted to the vehicle controller instructing the second vehicle controller to limit a second speed that the second vehicle can travel within the area based on the second target speed.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with a road condition within the area.

8. An apparatus for controlling vehicle speed, the apparatus comprising:

a memory storing instructions; and

a processor that executes the instructions, wherein execution of the instructions by the processor causes the processor to:

identify a location within an area based on information from a positioning system of a vehicle,

identify a profile distance that correspond to a distance to be covered while slowing from a current speed of the vehicle to a target speed based on a speed limiting factor,

identify the speed limiting factor that affects travel of the vehicle,

identify, based on the speed limiting factor and the profile distance, the target speed to transmit to a vehicle controller, the target speed identified at least in part by reducing a maximum speed associated with the location and the profile distance according to the speed limiting factor, and

transmit the target speed to the vehicle controller, the target speed transmitted to the vehicle controller instructing the vehicle controller to automatically limit a speed that the vehicle can travel within the area to the target speed by automatically actuating a brake to automatically slow the vehicle from the current speed to the target speed within the profile distance of the location.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the vehicle is a first type of vehicle, and wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with the first type of vehicle.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with an anomaly associated with the vehicle.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with a weight of the vehicle.

12. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with an experience level of a driver of the vehicle.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 further comprising the vehicle controller.

14. The apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising a network interface, wherein the network interface receives the information from the positioning system of the vehicle over a network, wherein the network interface transmits the target speed to the vehicle controller over the network.

15. A system for controlling vehicle speed, the system comprising:

a memory storing instructions; and

a processor that executes the instructions, wherein execution of the instructions by the processor causes the processor to:

identify a location within an area based on information from a positioning system associated with a vehicle,

identify a speed limiting factor that affects travel of the vehicle,

identify a profile distance that corresponds to a distance to be covered while slowing from a current speed of the vehicle to a target speed based on the speed limiting factor,

identify, based on the speed limiting factor and the profile distance, the target speed to transmit to a vehicle controller of the vehicle, the target speed identified at least in part by reducing a maximum speed associated with the location and the profile distance according to the speed limiting factor, and

transmit the target speed to the vehicle controller to automatically limit a speed that the vehicle can travel within the area to the target speed by automatically actuating a brake to automatically slow the vehicle from the current speed to the target speed within the profile distance of the location.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the vehicle is a first type of vehicle, and wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with the first type of vehicle.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with an anomaly associated with the vehicle.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with a weight of the vehicle.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with an experience level of a driver of the vehicle.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the speed limiting factor is associated with a road condition within the area.

21. The system of claim 15 , wherein the profile distance is associated with a rate of speed change.
