Abstract

A system includes a compressor and a controller. The controller operates the compressor in a flooded-start control mode. The flooded start control mode includes operating the compressor according to at least one cycle including a first time period during which the compressor is on, followed by a second time period during which the compressor is off. The controller determines at least one of the first time period, the second time period, and a number of cycles for the flooded-start control mode. At least one of the first time period, the second time period, and the number of cycles is based on received asset data corresponding to at least one of a type and a characteristic of at least one component of the refrigeration system. The controller operates the compressor in the flooded-start control mode after determining the first time period, the second time period, and the number of cycles.

Claims (29)

1. A system comprising:

a compressor for a refrigeration system; and

a controller that operates the compressor in a flooded-start control mode, the flooded start control mode including operating the compressor according to at least one cycle including a first time period during which the compressor is on, followed by a second time period during which the compressor is off,

wherein the controller receives asset data corresponding to at least one of a type and a characteristic of at least one component of the refrigeration system,

the controller determines the first time period, the second time period, and a number of cycles for the at least one cycle for the flooded-start control mode, the first time period, the second time period, and the number of cycles being based on the received asset data, and

the controller operates the compressor in the flooded-start control mode after determining the first time period, the second time period, and the number of cycles.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller communicates with other devices in the refrigeration system to receive the asset data.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller receives the asset data from user input.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the asset data indicates at least one of a specific type, a capacity, a model number, and a serial number for a flow control device of the refrigeration system.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the asset data indicates at least one of a compressor type and a compressor capacity.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein the type of the compressor includes data indicating whether the compressor is at least one of a multi-stage compressor, a variable capacity compressor, a modulated compressor, and a compressor having a delayed suction system.

7. The system of claim 5 wherein the asset data indicates whether the compressor is a direct suction compressor.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the asset data indicates at least one of a type and a characteristic of a condenser of the refrigeration system.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the asset data indicates at least one of a type and a characteristic of an evaporator of the refrigeration system.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the asset data indicates whether the compressor includes a crankcase heater.

11. A method comprising:

operating, with a controller, a compressor of a refrigeration system, the controller being configured to operate the compressor in a flooded-start control mode, the flooded-start control mode including operating the compressor according to at least one cycle including a first time period during which the compressor is on, followed by a second time period during which the compressor is off;

receiving, with the controller, asset data corresponding to at least one of a type and a characteristic of at least one component of the refrigeration system;

determining, with the controller, the first time period, the second time period, and a number of cycles for the at least one cycle for the flooded-start control mode, the first time period, the second time period, and the number of cycles being based on the received asset data; and

operating, with the controller, the compressor in the flooded-start control mode after determining the first time period, the second time period, and the number of cycles.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising communicating, with the controller, with other devices in the refrigeration system to receive the asset data.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising receiving, with the controller, the asset data from user input.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the asset data indicates at least one of a specific type, a capacity, a model number, and a serial number for a flow control device of the refrigeration system.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the asset data indicates at least one of a type and a capacity of the compressor of the refrigeration system.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the type of the compressor includes data indicating whether the compressor is at least one of a multi-stage compressor, a variable capacity compressor, a modulated compressor, and a compressor having a delayed suction system.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein the asset data indicates whether the compressor is a direct suction compressor.

18. The method of claim 11 wherein the asset data indicates a type and a characteristic of a condenser of the refrigeration system.

19. The method of claim 11 wherein the asset data indicates at least one of a type and a character of an evaporator of the refrigeration system.

20. The method of claim 11 wherein the asset data indicates whether the compressor includes a crankcase heater.
