Abstract

A system for adjusting a cutting tool includes a cutting system having a cutting tool configured to cut material thermoformed to a dental model. The cutting system is configured to determine, based on a cut line generated for the cutting tool to cut a dental aligner from the material thermoformed onto the dental model, that the cutting tool is incapable of following the cut line. The cutting system is configured to adjust a position of the cutting tool with respect to the cut line so the cutting tool is capable of following the cut line.

Claims (32)

1. A method of adjusting a cutting tool, the method comprising:

determining, based on a cut line generated for a cutting tool to cut a dental aligner from material thermoformed onto a dental model, that the cutting tool is incapable of following the cut line based on a constraint of the cutting tool; and

adjusting the position of the cutting tool with respect to the cut line so the cutting tool is capable of following the cut line within the constraint of the cutting tool.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cut line separates a tooth portion and a gingival portion of at least one of the material or the dental model.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein adjusting the position of the cutting tool comprises moving the cutting tool toward the gingival portion.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein moving the cutting tool toward the gingival portion comprises moving the cutting tool along an axis extending parallel or substantially parallel to a surface of the material or the dental model.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein adjusting the position of the cutting tool comprises rotating the cutting tool toward the gingival portion.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein rotating the cutting tool toward the gingival portion comprises rotating the cutting tool about an axis defined along or through the dental model and extending parallel or substantially parallel to the cut line.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the cutting tool is incapable of following the cut line comprises:

comparing a target position of the cutting tool when the cutting tool is to cut the dental aligner from the material to a constraint of the cutting tool; and

determining that the target position of the cutting tool is outside the constraint of the cutting tool.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the target position comprises a target tool vector defined by an angle of the cutting tool relative to a surface of the dental model.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the target tool vector is defined by an angle of a tip of the cutting tool relative to the surface of the dental model.

10. A system for adjusting a cutting tool, the system comprising:

a cutting system comprising a cutting tool, the cutting tool configured to cut material thermoformed to a dental model, the cutting system configured to:

determine, based on a cut line generated for the cutting tool to cut a dental aligner from material thermoformed onto the dental model, that the cutting tool in a position is incapable of following the cut line based on a constraint of the cutting tool; and

adjust the position of the cutting tool with respect to the cut line so the cutting tool is capable of following the cut line within the constraint of the cutting tool.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the cut line separates a tooth portion and a gingival portion of at least one of the material or the dental model.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein adjusting the position of the cutting tool comprises moving the cutting tool toward the gingival portion.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein moving the cutting tool toward the gingival portion comprises moving the cutting tool along an axis extending parallel or substantially parallel to a surface of the material or the dental model.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein adjusting the position of the cutting tool comprises rotating the cutting tool toward the gingival portion.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein rotating the cutting tool toward the gingival portion comprises rotating the cutting tool about an axis defined along or through the dental model and extending parallel or substantially parallel to the cut line.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein determining that the cutting tool is incapable of following the cut line comprises:

comparing a target position of the cutting tool when the cutting tool is to cut the dental aligner from the material to a constraint of the cutting tool; and

determining that the target position of the cutting tool is outside the constraint of the cutting tool.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the target position comprises a target tool vector defined by an angle of the cutting tool relative to a surface of the dental model.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the target tool vector is defined by an angle of a tip of the cutting tool relative to the surface of the dental model.

19. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations, the operations comprising:

determining, based on a cut line generated for a cutting tool to cut a dental aligner from material thermoformed onto a dental model, that the cutting tool in a position is incapable of following the cut line based on a constraint of the cutting tool; and

adjusting a position of the cutting tool with respect to the cut line so the cutting tool is capable of following the cut line within the constraint of the cutting tool.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the cut line separates a tooth portion and a gingival portion of at least one of the material or the dental model, and wherein adjusting the position of the cutting tool comprises:

adjusting the position of the cutting tool along an axis defined relative to at least one of the material or the dental model toward the gingival portion.
