Abstract

The principles set forth herein describe building a product finder. One aspect comprises receiving a request at a computing device to develop a product finder for a specified product category; receiving input at the computing device to configure the product finder, the input comprising data representing product information associated with the specified product category; developing, via a processor accessible by the computing device, the product finder based on an existing template, wherein developing the product finder based on the existing template reduces writing of computer code; and utilizing the input to customize the product finder. Other embodiments are disclosed herein.

Claims (27)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

caching computer code used to generate a product finder widget to provide a performance boost that avoids processor delays while waiting for data:

generating, using the cached computer code, the product finder widget, wherein the product finder widget corresponds to a specified product category having selectable attributes associated with products in the specified product category, wherein the product finder widget is created by customizing a template corresponding to the specified product category having selectable attributes associated with products in the specified product category, the selectable attributes being organized based on a decision tree, wherein the selectable attributes are distinct from the specified category, wherein the product finder widget is provided by a server and incorporated into a web site of a seller such that it appears integrated with the web site while being hosted by a web server other than the seller web site, the method comprising;

the product finder widget communicating with a remote product database stored on a remote server, wherein the remote product database periodically receives additional product inventory information from multiple vendor databases, as data sources, and normalizes and indexes the product information and provide the user with access to product data in the product database in accordance with vendor inventory;

changing the selectable attributes based on the inventory information;

receiving, by the product finder widget, a selection of at least one of the selectable attributes from a user;

sending, by a user computing device, a query including the at least one of the selectable attributes to the remote product database,

receiving, by the user computing device, product data from the remote product database describing products having the at least one of the selectable attributes; and displaying, by the user computing device, information corresponding to the product data in the product finder widget whereby the user can select a product relating to the product data for purchase.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the template is constructed by monitoring user behavior on one or more seller websites relating to the specified product category to obtain behavior information and generating the decision tree in accordance with the behavior information.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the product finder widget is generated by code running in a web browser of the user computing device.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the product finder widget is displayed in response to a user interaction with a web page displayed in the web browser.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the product is a digital media product.

6. A computer system comprising:

at least one computer processor; and

at least one memory operatively coupled to the at least one computer processor and storing instructions that, when executed by the at least on computer processor cause the at least one computer processor to:

cache computer code used to generate a product finder widget to provide a performance boost that avoids processor delays while waiting for data;

generate, using the cached computer code, the product finder widget, wherein the product finder widget corresponds to a specified product category having selectable attributes associated with products in the specified product category, wherein the product finder widget is created by customizing a template corresponding to the specified product category having selectable attributes associated with products in the specified product category, the selectable attributes being organized based on a decision tree, wherein the selectable attributes are distinct from the specified category, wherein the product finder widget is provided by a server and incorporated into a web site of a seller such that it appears integrated with the web site while being hosted by a web server other than the seller web site, the method comprising;

cause the product finder widget to communicate with a remote product database stored on a remote server, wherein the remote product database periodically receives additional product inventory information from multiple vendor databases, as data sources, and normalizes and indexes the product information and provide the user with access to product data in the product database in accordance with vendor inventory;

change the selectable attributes based on the inventory information;

cause the product finder widget to receive a selection of at least one of the selectable attributes from a user;

send a query including the at least one of the selectable attributes to the remote product database,

receive product data from the remote product database describing products having the at least one of the selectable attributes; and

display, on a user computing device, information corresponding to the product data in the product finder widget whereby the user can select a product relating to the product data for purchase.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the template is constructed by monitoring user behavior on one or more seller websites relating to the specified product category to obtain behavior information and generating the decision tree in accordance with the behavior information.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the product finder widget is generated by code running in a web browser of the user computing device.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the product finder widget is displayed in response to a user interaction with a web page displayed in the web browser.

10. The system of claim 6 , wherein the product is a digital media product.
