Abstract

Tissue fasteners carried on a tissue piercing deployment wire fasten tissue layers of a mammalian body together include a first member, a second member, and a connecting member extending between the first and second members. One of the first and second members has a configuration alterable by a deployment wire to permit release of the fastener from the deployment wire after deployment and without causing excessive tissue trauma.

Claims (15)

1. A method of implanting a fastener through tissue layers in a patient, comprising:

providing a fastener and a deployment wire, the fastener including a first member and a second member, connecting the first member to the second member by a connecting member, only the first member having a through channel dimensioned to be slidingly received on the deployment wire and a slit configured to be made larger so that the deployment wire can be snapped onto and released from the through channel;

the slit having a first elongated edge and a second elongated edge, the first and second elongated edges being spaced apart;

snapping the deployment wire through the slit and into the through channel by moving the first and second elongated edges farther apart to accommodate the deployment wire;

pushing the fastener along the deployment wire;

piercing a first tissue layer and a second tissue layer with the first member;

engaging the first tissue layer with the second member so that the connecting member extends through the first tissue layer and second tissue layer; and

continued pushing of the fastener causes the first member to pivot out of the through channel so that the first member is deployed through the second tissue layer and the second member contacts the first tissue layer with the connecting member extending through the first tissue layer and the second tissue layer.

The method for implanting a fastener of claim 1 , wherein the first member includes a distal end and a proximal end, the slit extending between the distal and proximal ends and communicating with the through channel, further comprising expanding the slit to accommodate a diameter of the deployment wire.

3. The method for implanting a fastener of claim 2 , wherein the deployment wire has a diameter and as the deployment wire is snapped through the slit, the first and second edges move apart a distance equal to the diameter of the deployment wire.

4. The method for implanting a fastener of claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the first member has a pointed distal tip for piercing the first tissue layer and the second tissue layer.

5. The method for implanting a fastener of claim 1 , wherein a pusher rod pushes the fastener along the deployment wire.

6. The method for implanting a fastener of claim 1 , wherein the first member pivots in a counter clockwise direction as the second member is prevented from advancing by the first tissue layer.

7. The method for implanting a fastener of claim 1 , wherein the deployment wire has a sharp tip for piercing the first tissue layer and the second tissue layer before the first member pierces the first tissue layer and the second tissue layer.

8. The method for implanting a fastener of claim 1 , wherein after the fastener has been deployed, retracting the deployment wire into a pusher rod and withdrawing the pusher rod and deployment wire from the patient.
