Abstract

Methods and systems for calibrating the return and forward links of a satellite communication system are provided according to embodiments of the invention. The phase and/or amplitude variations caused by the return and forward links are calculated and/or estimated to aid in beamforming, such as ground-based beamforming. Calibration earth stations, distributed within one or more beam patterns, may be used to transmit calibration codes to the gateway to calibrate the return link. Return links variations may be estimated using a weighted minimum mean square algorithm at the gateway. Forward links may be calibrated with calibration codes transmitted from the gateway through a hybrid matrix to at least one calibration station. Forward calibration links may also calibrate for temperature-dependent signal variations such as diplexer variations at the satellite.

Claims (30)

1. A method for ground-based calibration of a satellite forward link, the method comprising:

receiving satellite temperature data at a gateway from a satellite;

determining a phase shift based on the satellite temperature data from the satellite;

adjusting a signal based on the phase shift; and

transmitting the adjusted signal to the satellite.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the signal comprises a plurality of signals and adjusting comprises adjusting one or more of the plurality of signals.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein adjusting the signal comprises adjusting the plurality of signals based on the phase shift.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the phase shift comprises a plurality of phase shifts and adjusting the signal comprises adjusting the plurality of signals based on respective phase shifts of the plurality of phase shifts.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the signal comprises applying the phase shift to beamforming calculations for the signal.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the phase shift comprises looking up the phase shift in a lookup table based on the satellite temperature data.

7. A method for ground-based calibration of a satellite forward link, the method comprising:

receiving satellite temperature data at a gateway from a satellite;

determining an amplitude shift based on the satellite temperature data from the satellite;

adjusting a signal based on the amplitude shift; and

transmitting the adjusted signal to the satellite.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the signal comprises a plurality of signals and adjusting comprises adjusting one or more of the plurality of signals.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein adjusting the signal comprises adjusting the plurality of signals based on the amplitude shift.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the amplitude shift comprises a plurality of amplitude shifts and adjusting the signal comprises adjusting the plurality of signals based on respective amplitude shifts of the plurality of amplitude shifts.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein adjusting the signal comprises applying the amplitude shift to beamforming calculations for the signal.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein determining the amplitude shift comprises looking up the amplitude shift in a lookup table based on the satellite temperature data.

13. A method for ground-based calibration of a forward feeder link to a satellite, the method comprising:

transmitting at least one coded signal to a calibration earth station through a satellite system;

determining either or both of phase shift or amplitude shift for the forward feeder link from the at least one coded signal received at the calibration earth station;

receiving satellite temperature data at the calibration earth station from the satellite;

determining either or both of a temperature dependent phase shift or a temperature dependent amplitude shift based on the satellite temperature data from the satellite; and

subtracting either or both of the temperature dependent phase shift or the temperature dependent amplitude shift from either or both of the phase shift or the amplitude shift, thereby providing either or both of the phase shift or the amplitude shift for the forward feeder link.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

adjusting a signal based on either or both of the phase shift or the amplitude shift; and

transmitting the adjusted signal to the satellite for the forward feeder link.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the signal comprises a plurality of signals and adjusting comprises adjusting one or more of the plurality of signals.
