Abstract

A safe, reliable, reproducible system and method for entry into the pericardial sac. The method and system described generally includes penetration of the subcutaneous tissue with a guide sheath or a relatively blunt stylet contained within a sheath. The stylet is removed from the sheath and a hook mechanism is installed. Once in contact with the pericardium, the hook is engaged with the pericardial tissue, allowing the hook mechanism to draw the pericardium away from the heart to create a greater space between the heart and pericardium allowing needle insertion into the pericardial cavity in a much safer and controlled manner.

Claims (31)

1 . A system for safe entry into a pericardial sac (membrane), comprising:

an outer sheath with at least one lumen therein; and

a hooking/grasping mechanism positioned within said lumen, said hooking/grasping mechanism having an engagement member on an end thereof.

2 . The system of claim 1 , said engagement member further comprising a spiral shaped hook extending from said hooking mechanism.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein a distal end of said engagement member is disposed approximately 90 degrees relative to a longitudinal axis extending through said hooking mechanism.

4 . The system of claim 2 , wherein rotation of said hooking mechanism causes said engagement member to penetrate and engage a pericardial membrane

5 . The system of claim 1 , said engagement member further comprising at least one hook extending from said engagement member.

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein a distal end of said engagement member is disposed approximately 90 degrees relative to a longitudinal axis extending through said hooking mechanism.

7 . The system of claim 5 , wherein rotation of said hooking mechanism causes said engagement member to penetrate and engage a pericardial membrane

8 . The system of claim 1 , said hooking mechanism having a lumen therein for insertion of a large bore needle.

9 . The system of claim 8 , further comprising a guide wire inserted within said large bore needle.

10 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a large bore needle positioned in said at least one lumen adjacent said hooking mechanism.

11 . The system of claim 10 , further comprising a guide wire inserted within said large bore needle.

12 . A method for safe entry through a pericardial membrane, comprising:

inserting an outer sheath with at least one lumen therein through subcutaneous tissue to a position adjacent a pericardial membrane;

inserting a hooking mechanism into said lumen, said hooking mechanism having an engagement member on an end thereof; and

rotating said hooking mechanism to cause said engagement member to penetrate and engage said pericardial membrane.

13 . The method of claim 12 , said engagement member further comprising a spiral shaped hook extending from said hooking mechanism.

14 . The method of claim 12 , said engagement member further comprising at least one hook extending from said engagement member.

15 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

pulling said pericardial membrane away from a heart using said hooking mechanism.

16 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

penetrating said pericardial membrane using a large bore needle.

17 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

Inserting a guide wire into said pericardial membrane through said large bore needle.

18 . The method of claim 12 further comprising:

pulling said pericardial membrane into said lumen in said sheath using said hooking mechanism.

19 . The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

penetrating said pericardial membrane using a large bore needle.

20 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

Inserting a guide wire into said pericardial membrane through said large bore needle.
