Abstract

Pellet grills and associated methods of operation are disclosed. An example pellet grill includes a burn pot configured to combust pellet fuel received within the burn pot. The pellet grill further includes an auger configured to deliver the pellet fuel to the burn pot. The pellet grill further includes an auger motor operatively coupled to the auger. The pellet grill further includes one or more processors configured to determine whether a shutdown sequence of the pellet grill has been initiated. The one or more processors are further configured, in response to determining that the shutdown sequence has been initiated, to command the auger motor to reverse a direction of rotation of the auger. The reversal is to cause pellet fuel which the auger has not yet delivered to the burn pot to be purged in a direction away from the burn pot.

Claims (38)

1. A pellet grill, comprising:

a direct current (DC) power supply configured to convert alternating current (AC) power received from an AC line power source into DC power;

a burn pot configured to combust pellet fuel received within the burn pot;

an auger configured to deliver the pellet fuel to the burn pot;

a DC electric motor powered by the DC power supply and operatively coupled to the auger;

a DC electric fan powered by the DC power supply; and

one or more processors powered by the DC power supply and operatively coupled to the DC electric motor and the DC electric fan, the one or more processors to implement an automated shutdown protocol of the pellet grill whereby the one or more processors, in response to determining that a request to initiate a shutdown sequence of the pellet grill has been received, are configured to:

command the DC electric motor to reverse a direction of rotation of the auger, the reversal to cause pellet fuel which the auger has not yet delivered to the burn pot to be purged in a direction away from the burn pot; and

command the DC electric fan to operate in an increased output mode relative to a normal output mode of the DC electric fan.

2. The pellet grill of claim 1 , wherein the operation of the DC electric fan in the increased output mode as opposed to the normal output mode is to cause pellet fuel located in the burn pot to combust more rapidly.

3. The pellet grill of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors, in connection with implementing the automated shutdown protocol, are configured to command the DC electric fan to operate in the increased output mode subsequent to commanding the DC electric motor to reverse the direction of rotation of the auger.

4. The pellet grill of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors, in connection with implementing the automated shutdown protocol, are further configured to command the DC electric fan to operate in a pulsed output mode subsequent to commanding the DC electric fan to operate in the increased output mode, the operation of the DC electric fan in the pulsed output mode to cause ash located in the burn pot to be removed from the burn pot.

5. The pellet grill of claim 4 , wherein the one or more processors, in connection with implementing the automated shutdown protocol, are further configured to:

subsequent to commanding the DC electric fan to operate in the pulsed output mode, generate a notification indicating that the shutdown sequence is complete; and

cause the notification to be presented at a user interface of the pellet grill.

6. The pellet grill of claim 5 , wherein the one or more processors, in connection with implementing the automated shutdown protocol, are further configured to cause the notification to be wirelessly transmitted from the pellet grill to a device located remotely from the pellet grill.

7. The pellet grill of claim 1 , wherein the increased output mode of the DC electric fan corresponds to a maximum output mode of the DC electric fan.

8. A method for implementing an automated shutdown protocol of a pellet grill, the pellet grill including a direct current (DC) power supply configured to convert alternating current (AC) power received from an AC line power source into DC power, a burn pot configured to combust pellet fuel received within the burn pot, an auger configured to deliver the pellet fuel to the burn pot, a DC electric motor powered by the DC power supply and operatively coupled to the auger, a DC electric fan powered by the DC power supply, and one or more processors powered by the DC power supply and operatively coupled to the DC electric motor and the DC electric fan, the method comprising:

in response to determining that a request to initiate a shutdown sequence of the pellet grill has been received, commanding the DC electric motor, via the one or more processors, to reverse a direction of rotation of the auger, the reversal to cause pellet fuel which the auger has not yet delivered to the burn pot to be purged in a direction away from the burn pot; and

in further response to determining that the request to initiate the shutdown sequence has been received, commanding the DC electric fan to operate in an increased output mode relative to a normal output mode of the DC electric fan.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the operation of the DC electric fan in the increased output mode as opposed to the normal output mode is to cause pellet fuel located in the burn pot to combust more rapidly.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein commanding the DC electric fan to operate in the increased output mode is subsequent to commanding the DC electric motor to reverse the direction of rotation of the auger.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising, subsequent to commanding the DC electric fan to operate in the increased output mode, commanding the DC electric fan, via the one or more processors, to operate in a pulsed output mode, the operation of the DC electric fan in the pulsed output mode to cause ash located in the burn pot to be removed from the burn pot.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

subsequent to commanding the DC electric fan to operate in the pulsed output mode, generating, via the one or more processors, a notification indicating that the shutdown sequence is complete; and

presenting the notification at a user interface of the pellet grill.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising wirelessly transmitting the notification from the pellet grill to a device located remotely from the pellet grill.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the increased output mode of the DC electric fan corresponds to a maximum output mode of the DC electric fan.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of a pellet grill, the pellet grill further including a direct current (DC) power supply configured to convert alternating current (AC) power received from an AC line power source into DC power, a burn pot configured to combust pellet fuel received within the burn pot, an auger configured to deliver the pellet fuel to the burn pot, a DC electric motor powered by the DC power supply and operatively coupled to the auger, a DC electric fan powered by the DC power supply, and one or more processors powered by the DC power supply and operatively coupled to the DC electric motor and the DC electric fan, the non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors, in connection with implementing an automated shutdown protocol of the pellet grill, to at least:

in response to determining that a request to initiate a shutdown sequence of the pellet grill has been received, command the DC electric motor to reverse a direction of rotation of the auger, the reversal to cause pellet fuel which the auger has not yet delivered to the burn pot to be purged in a direction away from the burn pot; and

in further response to determining that the request to initiate the shutdown sequence has been received, command the DC electric fan to operate in an increased output mode relative to a normal output mode of the DC electric fan.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the operation of the DC electric fan in the increased output mode as opposed to the normal output mode is to cause pellet fuel located in the burn pot to combust more rapidly.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the one or more processors to command the DC electric fan to operate in the increased output mode subsequent to commanding the DC electric motor to reverse the direction of rotation of the auger.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the one or more processors to command the DC electric fan to operate in a pulsed output mode subsequent to commanding the DC electric fan to operate in the increase output mode, the operation of the DC electric fan in the pulsed output mode to cause ash located in the burn pot to be removed from the burn pot.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the one or more processors to:

subsequent to commanding the DC electric fan to operate in the pulsed output mode, generate a notification indicating that the shutdown sequence is complete; and

cause the notification to be presented at a user interface of the pellet grill.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the increased output mode of the DC electric fan corresponds to a maximum output mode of the DC electric fan.
