Abstract

An apparatus suitable for use in an air-conditioning system and configured to provide a plurality of selectable capacitance values includes a plurality of capacitive devices and a pressure interrupter cover assembly. Each of the capacitive devices has a first capacitor terminal and a second capacitor terminal. The pressure interrupter cover assembly includes a deformable cover, a set of capacitor cover terminals, a common cover terminal, and a set of insulation structures. The apparatus also includes a conductor configured to electrically connect the second capacitor terminal of at least one of the capacitive devices to the common cover terminal.

Claims (20)

1. An apparatus suitable for use in an air-conditioning system and configured to provide a plurality of selectable capacitance values, comprising:

a capacitive device housed in a case, wherein a first capacitor provided by the capacitive device has a capacitance value of about 2.5 to 5 microfarads, a second capacitor provided by the capacitive device has a capacitance value of about 5 to 25 microfarads, and a third capacitor provided by the capacitive device has a capacitance value of about 10 to 70 microfarads;

a cover assembly comprising:

a deformable cover mountable to the case,

three capacitor cover terminals, each of the three capacitor cover terminals corresponding to one of the three capacitors of the capacitive device and each having three contacts extending from the deformable cover, wherein the deformable cover is configured to displace at least one of the three capacitor cover terminals upon an operative failure of at least one of the three capacitors,

three insulation structures, wherein each of the three insulation structures is configured to provide insulation for at least one of the three capacitor cover terminals, and

a common cover terminal having at least one contact extending from the deformable cover; and

three conductors, wherein each of the three conductors is configured to electrically connect one of the capacitor cover terminals to a corresponding capacitor of the capacitive device.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the three capacitors of the capacitive device correspond to three capacitor sections of a single wound capacitive element.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the combined capacitance value of the three capacitors provided by the capacitive device is about 17.5, 45, 50, 60, 65, or 85 microfarads.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein selective connections of the capacitor cover terminals corresponding to the capacitors of the capacitive device provide a plurality of operable capacitance values.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the common cover terminal includes four contacts.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first capacitor has a capacitance value of about 2.5 microfarads, the second capacitor has a capacitance value of about 5 microfarads, the third capacitor has a capacitance value of about 10 microfarads.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first capacitor has a capacitance value of about 5 microfarads, the second capacitor has a capacitance value of about 10 microfarads, and the third capacitor has a capacitance value of about 30 microfarads.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first capacitor has a capacitance value of about 5 microfarads, the second capacitor has a capacitance value of about 10 microfarads, and the third capacitor has a capacitance value of about 35 microfarads.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first capacitor has a capacitance value of about 5 microfarads, the second capacitor has a capacitance value of about 25 microfarads, and the third capacitor has a capacitance value of about 30 microfarads.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first capacitor has a capacitance value of about 5 microfarads, the second capacitor has a capacitance value of about 10 microfarads, and the third capacitor has a capacitance value of about 50 microfarads.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first capacitor has a capacitance value of about 5 microfarads, the second capacitor has a capacitance value of about 10 microfarads, and the third capacitor has a capacitance value of about 70 microfarads.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the insulation structures are colored.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the insulation structures are differently colored.
