Abstract

An encoder includes memory, and circuitry accessible to the memory. The circuitry accessible to the memory: determines whether OBMC is applicable to generation of a prediction image of a current block, according to whether BIO is to be applied to the generation of the prediction image of the current block; when BIO is to be applied to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, determines that OBMC is not applicable to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, and applies BIO to the generation of the prediction image of the current block without applying OBMC.

Claims (36)

memory; and

circuitry accessible to the memory,

wherein the circuitry accessible to the memory:

determines whether overlapped block motion compensation (OBMC) is applicable to generation of a prediction image of a current block, according to whether bi-directional optical flow (BIO) is to be applied to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, the current block being included in a current picture in the video; and

when the BIO is to be applied to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, determines that the OBMC is not applicable to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, and applies the BIO to the generation of the prediction image of the current block without applying the OBMC,

the BIO generates the prediction image of the current block by reference to a spatial gradient of luminance in an image obtained by performing motion compensation of the current block using a motion vector of the current block, and

the OBMC corrects the prediction image of the current block using an image obtained by performing motion compensation of the current block using a motion vector of a block surrounding the current block.

2. The encoder according to claim 1 ,

wherein the circuitry further: selects one mode from among (i) a first mode that applies neither the BIO nor the OBMC to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, (ii) a second mode that applies the OBMC to the generation of the prediction image of the current block without applying the BIO, and (iii) a third mode that applies the BIO to the generation of the prediction image of the current block without applying the OBMC; generates the prediction image of the current block in the one mode selected; and

when selecting the third mode as the one mode, determines that the OBMC is not applicable to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, in accordance with application of the BIO to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, and generates the prediction image of the current block in the third mode that applies the BIO to the generation of the prediction image of the current block without applying the OBMC.

3. The encoder according to claim 2 ,

wherein the circuitry encodes a signal indicating, among a first value corresponding to the first mode, a second value corresponding to the second mode, and a third value corresponding to the third mode, one value corresponding to the one mode selected from among the first mode, the second mode, and the third mode.

4. A decoder that decodes a video using inter picture prediction, the decoder comprising:

memory; and

circuitry accessible to the memory,

wherein the circuitry accessible to the memory:

determines whether overlapped block motion compensation (OBMC) is applicable to generation of a prediction image of a current block, according to whether bi-directional optical flow (BIO) is to be applied to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, the current block being included in a current picture in the video; and

when the BIO is to be applied to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, determines that the OBMC is not applicable to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, and applies the BIO to the generation of the prediction image of the current block without applying the OBMC,

the BIO generates the prediction image of the current block by reference to a spatial gradient of luminance in an image obtained by performing motion compensation of the current block using a motion vector of the current block, and

the OBMC corrects the prediction image of the current block using an image obtained by performing motion compensation of the current block using a motion vector of a block surrounding the current block.

5. The decoder according to claim 4 ,

wherein the circuitry further: selects one mode from among (i) a first mode that applies neither the BIO nor the OBMC to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, (ii) a second mode that applies the OBMC to the generation of the prediction image of the current block without applying the BIO, and (iii) a third mode that applies the BIO to the generation of the prediction image of the current block without applying the OBMC; generates the prediction image of the current block in the one mode selected; and

when selecting the third mode as the one mode, determines that the OBMC is not applicable to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, in accordance with application of the BIO to the generation of the prediction image of the current block, and generates the prediction image of the current block in the third mode that applies the BIO to the generation of the prediction image of the current block without applying the OBMC.

6. The decoder according to claim 5 ,

wherein the circuitry decodes a signal indicating, among a first value corresponding to the first mode, a second value corresponding to the second mode, and a third value corresponding to the third mode, one value corresponding to the one mode selected from among the first mode, the second mode, and the third mode.

7. An encoding method of encoding a video using inter picture prediction, the encoding method comprising:
