Vacuum and positive pressure ventilation systems and methods for intrathoracic pressure regulation
Medical techniques include systems and methods for administering a positive pressure ventilation, a positive end expiratory pressure, and a vacuum to a person. Approaches also include treating a person with an intrathoracic pressure regulator so as to modulate or upregulate the autonomic system of the person, and treating a person with a combination of an intrathoracic pressure regulation treatment and an intra-aortic balloon pump treatment.
1. A multiple mode ventilation system for providing ventilation treatment to a patient, the system comprising:
a patient port comprising an inspiratory lumen and an expiratory lumen and adapted to be in fluid communication with the patient's airway;
a ventilator mechanism in fluid communication with the patient port;
at least one valve configured to control direction of flow between the ventilator mechanism and the patient port during administration of the ventilation treatment; and
a user interface configured to receive a user input for assisting a user in operating the ventilator mechanism, the user input comprising at least an indication of patient size, and the user interface further configured to provide for a basic mode or an advanced mode based on the received user input, wherein the advanced mode enables manual control of one or more ventilation parameters provided by the ventilator mechanism,
wherein the one or more ventilation parameters are provided according to a pre-programmed default when the basic mode is activated, and
wherein the pre-programmed default is based on an input of the patient size.
2. The ventilation system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more ventilation parameters comprises at least one of: respiratory rate, tidal volume, positive end expiratory pressure, and circulatory assist.
3. The ventilation system of claim 1 , wherein the received user input from the user interface comprises a lock-out mechanism that locks out use of the advanced mode when activated.
4. The ventilation system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more ventilation parameters are provided according to a pre-programmed default when the basic mode is activated.
5. The ventilation system of claim 4 , wherein the one or more ventilation parameters provided according to the pre-programmed default comprises at least one of: respiratory rate, tidal volume, positive end expiratory pressure, and level of negative pressure.
6. The ventilation system of claim 1 , wherein the received user input from the user interface comprises an indication for operation in at least one of a positive pressure ventilation mode and a continuous positive airway pressure mode.
7. The ventilation system of claim 6 , wherein the system, when placed into the positive pressure ventilation mode, is configured to allow a user to adjust a positive end expiratory pressure delivered to the patient.
8. The ventilation system of claim 6 , wherein a manually-actuable patient size icon corresponds to the positive pressure ventilation mode.
9. The ventilation system of claim 8 , wherein the positive pressure ventilation mode is initiated following a user input that confirms selection of the positive pressure ventilation mode.
10. The ventilation system of claim 6 , wherein in the positive pressure ventilation mode the at least one valve is configured to provide fluid communication between the inspiratory lumen of the patient port and the ventilation mechanism.
11. The ventilation system of claim 6 , wherein a manually-actuable patient size icon associated with a specific pressure corresponds to the continuous positive airway pressure mode.
12. The ventilation system of claim 11 , wherein the continuous positive airway pressure mode is initiated following a user input that confirms selection of the continuous positive airway pressure mode.
13. The ventilation system of claim 6 , wherein in the continuous positive airway pressure mode the at least one valve is configured to provide fluid communication between the expiratory lumen of the patient port and the ventilation mechanism.
14. The ventilation system of claim 1 , wherein the indication of patient size corresponds to a customized treatment protocol.
15. The ventilation system of claim 14 , wherein the customized treatment protocol based on patient size comprises one or more preset ventilation parameters comprising at least one of respiratory rate, tidal volume, and positive end expiratory pressure.
16. The ventilation system of claim 1 , wherein the user interface comprises a plurality of selectable icons, each icon corresponding to a predetermined patient size, such that selection of an icon by a user provides the indication of patient size.
17. The ventilation system of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of selectable icons corresponding to a predetermined patient size corresponds to patient height.
18. The ventilation system of claim 17 , wherein the plurality of selectable icons corresponding to a predetermined patient size corresponds to a predicted patient weight.
19. The ventilation system of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of selectable icons are associated with a patient size legend.
20. The ventilation system of claim 1 , wherein an exterior surface of the user interface is covered with a clear membrane.
