Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for sealing an ear canal for retaining a solution in the ear canal. Adhesive earplugs are provided through which the solution can be delivered, and which, following delivery, retain the fluid in the ear canal. The systems and methods may also be useful for delivering an anesthetizing solution to the ear canal of a human patient and for maintaining the solution therein for use with an iontophoresis system for anesthetizing the tympanic membrane.

Claims (32)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

an earplug insertable into an ear canal, the earplug defining a passageway;

a frame including a tubular portion, the tubular portion at least partially disposable within the passageway of the earplug, the earplug and the frame collectively defining a working channel;

a shaft extending through the working channel, the shaft defining a lumen and including a distal portion with at least one spray aperture in fluid communication with the lumen, the shaft configured to deliver fluid into a space distal to the earplug to fill a portion of the ear canal and the working channel, the shaft and the tubular portion spaced from each other to define a vent path configured to vent air and fluid from the working channel during the delivery of fluid; and

an electrode disposed within the tubular portion and near the shaft.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the earplug includes a dome-shaped portion and a tubular portion, the dome-shaped portion surrounding the tubular portion of the earplug and configured to engage a surface of the ear canal, the tubular portion of the earplug defining the passageway.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein a flap is coupled to the dome-shaped portion of the earplug, the flap configured to facilitate removal of the earplug from the ear canal.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the electrode is disposed along the inner surface of the tubular portion.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the electrode is a coiled electrode that is disposed within the working channel.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the tubular portion defines a lumen, the passageway including a portion that extends distally from the lumen of the tubular portion such that the portion of the passageway and the lumen of the tubular portion define the working channel.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the frame defines a grip configured to be gripped for insertion of the earplug into the ear canal.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion of the shaft is disposed distal to a distal end of the earplug.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the frame defines at least one vent hole in fluid communication with the vent path for venting air and fluid from the working channel.

10. An apparatus, comprising:

an earplug insertable into an ear canal, the earplug defining a passageway;

a shaft extending through the passageway and configured to deliver fluid into the ear canal;

an adhesive disposed on an outside surface of the earplug, the earplug including the adhesive configured to contact a surface of the ear canal to form a seal between the earplug and the ear canal such that the fluid delivered into the ear canal can be retained in a space in the ear canal between the earplug and a tympanic membrane;

a liner configured to cover the adhesive, the liner removable from the adhesive during or after the earplug is inserted into the ear canal to expose the adhesive for contact with the surface of the ear canal; and

wherein the liner includes a gripping portion and an adhesive protecting portion, the gripping portion and the adhesive protecting portion folded over one another such that pulling on the gripping portion unfolds the liner to remove the liner from the adhesive during or after the earplug is inserted into the ear canal.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the earplug includes a dome-shaped portion and the adhesive is positioned on an outside surface of the dome-shaped portion.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the earplug includes a flange surrounding the dome-shaped portion.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the adhesive is arranged in a set of annular bands on an external surface of the earplug.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the set of annular bands includes a first band having a first thickness and a second band having a second thickness less than the first thickness.

15. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the adhesive is a temperature sensitive adhesive.

16. An apparatus, comprising:

an earplug insertable into an ear canal, the earplug defining a passageway;

a frame including a tubular portion that defines a lumen, the tubular portion at least partially disposable within the passageway of the earplug;

a shaft extending through the lumen, the shaft configured to deliver fluid into a space distal to the earplug to fill a portion of the ear canal and the lumen of the tubular portion; and

an electrode attached to an inner surface of the tubular portion and configured to provide an electric current to the fluid when the ear canal and the lumen of the tubular portion are filled with the fluid.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the electrode is a coiled electrode.

18. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the shaft and the tubular portion are spaced from each other to define a vent path configured to vent air and a portion of the fluid from the lumen during the delivery of the fluid.

19. The apparatus of claim 16 , further comprising an adhesive disposable on an outside surface of the earplug, the earplug including the adhesive configured to form a seal against an inner surface of the ear canal when the earplug is inserted into the ear canal.
