Abstract

Described herein are systems and methods for marking a dental aligner. A method for marking a dental aligner includes receiving a digital model corresponding to a dental aligner. The digital model includes a dental arch comprising a plurality of teeth. The method further includes determining whether a section of teeth on a right side or a left side of the dental arch includes flatter occlusal surfaces and selecting the section with the flatter occlusal surfaces, identifying surfaces on the teeth of the selected section that are flat relative to other surfaces on the teeth of the selected section, determining a line of best fit between the flat surfaces, and marking the dental aligner with a marking based on the line of best fit.

Claims (48)

1. A method for marking a dental aligner comprising:

receiving a digital model corresponding to a dental aligner, the digital model including a dental arch comprising a plurality of teeth;

identifying, within a selected section of the teeth, occlusal surfaces of the teeth that are flatter relative to other occlusal surfaces of the teeth, wherein the identified flatter occlusal surfaces include at least two adjacent occlusal surface areas of a same tooth from the selected section of the teeth;

determining a best fit for a marking among the flatter occlusal surfaces; and

marking the dental aligner with the marking based on the best fit determination.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected section of the teeth is a section of rear teeth.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the selected section of the teeth is a section of molars and premolars.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital model comprises a plurality of polygons representing the occlusal surfaces of the teeth, and wherein the selected section of the teeth is selected based on face normal vectors of the plurality of polygons.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital model comprises a plurality of polygons representing the occlusal surfaces of the teeth, and wherein the method further comprises:

determining a face normal vector for each polygon representing the occlusal surfaces in the digital model;

determining a z-direction component for each face normal vector;

determining an average z-direction component for a plurality of sections of teeth; and

selecting a section of the teeth having the average z-direction component closer to 1.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital model comprises a plurality of polygons representing the occlusal surfaces of the teeth, and wherein identifying the occlusal surfaces of the teeth that are flatter relative to the other occlusal surfaces of the teeth comprises:

determining a face normal vector for each polygon representing the occlusal surfaces of the selected section of the teeth;

determining a z-direction component for each face normal vector; and

identifying each group of contiguous polygons each having a face normal z-direction component greater than or equal to a threshold value as a flatter occlusal surface.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the threshold value is 0.85.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the best fit for the marking comprises determining a line of best fit between at least a subset of the flatter occlusal surfaces.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein determining the line of best fit comprises:

determining a centroid for each flat surface; and

determining the line of best fit between at least a subset of the centroids.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein marking the dental aligner with the marking comprises etching the dental aligner with the marking using a laser.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marking is a string of alphanumeric characters.

12. A system for marking a dental aligner comprising:

a processing circuit comprising at least one processor and a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the processing circuit to:

receive a digital model corresponding to a dental aligner, the digital model including a dental arch comprising a plurality of teeth;

identify, within a selected section of the teeth, occlusal surfaces of the teeth that are flatter relative to other occlusal surfaces of the teeth, wherein the identified flatter occlusal surfaces include at least two adjacent occlusal surface areas of a same tooth among the selected section of the teeth; and

determine a best fit for a marking among the flatter occlusal surfaces; and

a marking system configured to mark the dental aligner with the marking based on the best fit determination.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the selected section of the teeth is a section of rear teeth.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the digital model comprises a plurality of polygons representing the occlusal surfaces of the teeth, and wherein the selected section of the teeth is selected based on face normal vectors of the plurality of polygons.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the instructions cause the processing circuit to identify the occlusal surfaces of the teeth that are flatter relative to the other occlusal surfaces of the teeth by:

determining a face normal vector for each polygon representing the occlusal surfaces of the selected section of the teeth;

determining a z-direction component for each face normal vector; and

identifying each group of contiguous polygons each having a face normal z-direction component greater than or equal to a threshold value as a flatter occlusal surface.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the instructions cause the processing circuit to determine the best fit for the marking by determining a line of best fit between at least a subset of the flatter occlusal surfaces.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the marking system is a laser etching system.

18. A memory storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause a system to:

receive a digital model corresponding to a dental aligner, the digital model including a dental arch comprising a plurality of teeth;

identify, within a selected section of the teeth, occlusal surfaces of the teeth that are flatter relative to other occlusal surfaces of the teeth, wherein the identified flatter occlusal surfaces include at least two adjacent occlusal surface areas of a same tooth among the selected section of the teeth;

determine a best fit for a marking among the flatter occlusal surfaces; and

provide the best fit determination to a marking system configured to mark the dental aligner with the marking based on the best fit determination.

19. The memory of claim 18 , wherein the selected section of the teeth is a section of rear teeth.

20. The memory of claim 18 , wherein the digital model comprises a plurality of polygons representing the occlusal surfaces of the teeth, and wherein the selected section of the teeth is selected based on face normal vectors of the plurality of polygons.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises selecting a section of the teeth having an average z-direction component closer to an integer.

22. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the occlusal surfaces of the teeth that are flatter relative to the other occlusal surfaces of the teeth comprises identifying a group of contiguous polygons having a face normal z-direction component greater than or equal to a threshold value as a flatter occlusal surface.

23. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dental aligner is marked with the marking after the dental aligner is physically manufactured.
